sad story - a great, working, product squeezed by large investors shorting it (i.e.cable/satellite companies with their own fee based PVRs) and the expectation of obsolescance and replacement by media PCs - which is unreal, as you have to be a geek to get it going...

Probably not as popular because cable DVR boxes are, in many cases, a better product. DirecTiVo is still a great product, but the others don't stand up when you can record 2 shows at once on a Comcast DVR.

I don't know anyone with a TiVo, and everyone I've talked to don't think it'd worth paying the monthly fee, especially after buying the unit.

I am a DirecTV customer and was offered a DirecTV PVR with TIVO for only $49. The service is like $5 a month.

The problem is that you cannot network the PVR that DirecTV sells you. It works, the service is cheap BUT if you wish to archive then it is pretty much a no-go.

The unit the OP posted is networkable so that you can transfer recorded shows. That, in my book is a plus.

I am a relative newbie at PVRs. My son has a Reply TV and hacked it with a larger HD. He loves it so much he paid the $300 fee upfront.

Is there something I am missing? Is there a better way to be able to record and archive (aka VCR) but with one of these units?
