Tivo are offering Series 1 users the opportunity to transfer their Lifetime membership to a 80 hour Series 2 for free until March 10th, if you buy the unit from Tivo.

YOu have to call them- go to avsforums.com for more info.

Why transfer to a series II, though? They don't seem to be any better. On the contrary, they're less hackable, at least for now...

Deal will be officially announced on TiVo's site tomorrow (2/11). Initially I was excited about it, but as an early adopted, I'm already grandfathered in with 1 free xfer which I would lose with this promo. Looking into Series 2, it doesn't seem worth it to me. Now if HMO were FREE, then I would be more likely to do it. Otherwise I think I'll use my free xfer on the HDTiVos.

Cant you transfer if your tivo "breaks"

The tivo site has a form in the manage my account section

"You can change your TiVo Service Number online if either of these situations apply:
You activated your DVR and then exchanged it through your retailer or through the manufacturer and now need to update the TiVo Service Number on your account
You need to correct the TiVo Service Number that you initially activated"

may be worth it with the multimedia option addon for tivo2. supposed to be able to access music from your lan through the tivo interface...granted thats a $99 addon but I think its only available for series 2 units.

i was able to buy a series2 refurb for $150 AR and sell my series 1 for $200...if you can grab the 60hr refurb thats the one to get I guess bec its got the room for the sec hdd and bracket already inside.

runciter, can you give me any more info about how you know you were grandfathered in with the "one transfer" issue? Just wondering... I've had my tivo for quite a while and if there's something in the documentation, I'd love to dig it up so I could transfer my lifetime in the future...

FYI, I did see this show up on my tivo news screen a few days ago. Sounds like it may only be for a certain model though. The series 2 80 hour model... guess I'll have to go check out if it's possible to upgrade the 80 hour series two. Have heard that only the att broadband series 2 was able to accept another hard drive...??

Sure. You can tell if you are grandfathered by your incept date, err activation date. The magic date is January 21, 2000. Some details are in this thread. In the terms of the Upgrade to Series 2 offer they explicitly mention us grandfathered users:
For subscribers who purchased product lifetime subscription prior to January 21, 2000, acceptance of this offer constitutes your one-time subscription transfer.

Yeah the upgrade offer is only on (the most expensive) 80 hr Series 2. Details are here. Note this free xfer is not the same as the one I mention above. It is applicable to a lot more SA TiVo owners. Oh, and yeah all Series 2 units can be upgraded with another drive. The newer units (specifically the 80 hr) require a different "bracket"... it is definately a bit funky. Details at 9th tee.

Hmmm.. should i upgrade my Sony SVR2000 with 250hrs + Turbonet + Memory 16mb Upgrade Kit for a brand spanking new Tivo 2 @80hrs ? the transfer deal sounds good, but you are forced to buy directly from them at around $400.00 with shipping, then send for the MIR.. hmmmmmmmm

Advantages ? None that i can be raving about

ps: i know i can probably add more hrs to the new TIVO2, but ......................

After talking with a CSR @Tivo the only advantage the Series 2 has is the HMO option, and onboard USB 2.0. IMHO not worth the expense as I have a 260 hour 32MB Tivo Series 1.

I don't watch more tv with my tivo, I watch the shows I want to watch when I have time to watch them. I actually watch more tv in the same amount of time due to the lack of commercials. I can't stand watching tv when there is no tivo. I am too used to having no commercials.

Mine has like 30+ kid movies, which makes it sooooo easy to just " point, click and watch instantly " (btw, they are all dumped dVd's so the quality is excellent) . Thes best thing is that they are all " named according to the title " thanks to a certain TCL file.

Actually I watch a lot less television now because I can skip through all the adverts in a few seconds; and I can fast-forward through the slow/uninteresting parts of programs.

That's the funniest thing- people with Tivos know "the secret." Those outside of the circle of tivo always say that though, that we watch too much TV.

Tivo makes your tv viewing more efficient- on your terms, your time, commercial free. I will never give mine up!

Don't forget that the Series 2 has a faster processor and more RAM. I think it will speed things up with my 246 hour TiVo.

Yeah, TiVo makes tv time more efficient. I've converted a lot of people until my modem died (yes I had it thru a modem/line surge protector) and I was bitter. Eventually got a TurboNet card and I'm happy again.

ICR5, what TCL file are you talking about that will do that? Also I've read there was/is a TCL file that will actually show the names of PPVs on DirecTV instead of the generic PPV listing. I don't order hardly any PPVs, so I never got around to looking into that much, but if any of y'all know anything about that, much appreciated! :)

Series2s also have folders that we don't have. Still, unless they offer HMO for free, it doesn't seem worth it IMHO.

As much of a Tivo fan and proponet I am ... I am NEVER going to upgrade to series 2 Tivo (or any newer series) until and unless they provide an option to extract video from the unit (or at least don't explicitly prevent that ... as they are doing with series 2).

I am perfectly happy with my current 240 hr Series 1 Tivo with a TurboNET card and will keep on extracting video to my hearts content for some more time to come !

This is the only reason I recently bought a ReplayTV despite its many problems. And if Tivo keeps on maintaining their current opposition to video extraction, they aren't going to get much business from me in the future :disgust:

SonicBlue (ReplayTV manufacturer) is being sued by many of the media companies partly because of the ability to easily extract video files.

I believe what you are doing is breaking copyright, but do not hold me to that. This is the reason that Tivo does not promote the ability to extract video - to help keep the media monsters eyes off of them.

9th tee is about to put the series II to shame with their cache card. The series I continues to be the most upgradable.

Not exactly. SonicBlue is being sued for their Internet Show Sharing feature as well as the CommercialAdvance feature (which automatically skips over *most* commercials) ... and it has still not been determined if these features are truly illegal (there hasn't been any judgement in this case as far as I know).

I am not saying Tivo needs to implement the internet show sharing capability ... as long as they allow me to extract and archive video (that I recorded myself) in any format I want, I will be a happy camper. Heck, they even explicitly allow you to save shows on a video tape ! Why not let me create my own DVDs ?

Finally, I am not even saying that Tivo explicitly needs to allow people to directly extract shows from their units (although that would be ideal) ... as long as they don't put measures to explicitly prevent extraction, I'll stop complaining !

It is not illegal to archive shows for yourself that you want to view later. It is probably not even illegal to share network shows (ABC, PBS, NBC etc that anyone can get for free with an over-the-air antenna). What is illegal is sharing shows from premium channels (HBO, ShowTime etc) with someone that doesn't subscribe to these channels.

Anyway, I am pretty sure that Tivo's "military grade" encryption on the Series-2 units will soon be broken, but I am not giving a single dime of my money to a company like Tivo that kisses up the big networks by screwing their customers.

If SonicBlue is put out of business, I'll just go the ATI AIW route with my HTPC :)
