I know of a TIVO box for sale for $30 and I am wondering if it is possible to buy the box and call for a subscription, or are you required to buy a box with the plan?
 
You do not have to buy a tivo with a subscription, you can get one online or by phone by giving them the service number from a sticker on the tivo.

You can get the new DT version for $100 after rebate right now, so you might want to buy new depending on the age and condition of the one for sale.
