I called Tivo today to cancel my service and they offered to permanently drop my Tivo price from $12.95 a month to $6.95 a month. Hot if you are a Tivo subscriber. Im guessing they are doing this because of the mass people who are going to be calling when they get the new ad popups.

Tivo is rolling out (quietly) a change in the way FF works. Now, while FF'ing through commercials (or even the program I'd guess), a small ad will appear in the middle of the screen. You'll still be able to see the show around it at the "borders", so you'll know when to stop FF'ing.
Apparently, using 30 second skip defeats it, since it's only a jump ahead 30 seconds instead of fast-forwarding. I have my fingers crossed that Tivo doesn't disable 30 second skip because of this - I use it exclusivly

I would rather pay the $6.95 or even $12.95 a month to use a stand-alone unit vice a DirecTV unit. I bought my DirecTV DVR (Hughes DVR-80) in March and went through a month of pain to hack the unit so that I get most of the functionality of a stand-alone.
The newer DTV DVRs (gen 2.5) like the R-10 are not currently hackable (unless you feel like de-soldering a chip).

I have both SA Tivo and DTV DVR, both have good points.
DTV has better control over the receiver (this can vary with your receiver model)
DTV has 2 tuners
DTV doesn't uncompress the stream just to turn around and recompress it to the HD = good looking pic (Same as what comes off the satellite) and still good record times
SA Tivo has Home Media Option -
- network connection not telephone call
- can move programs from Tivo to PC and burn to DVD
- play mp3 collection through the TV/home theatre setup
- show pics from the computer on the TV
can record over the air (antenna) programs (DTivo must come from satellite)
can use remote for either... DTivo remote doesn't like my SA Tivo even though they look alike (peanut remote)

If a DVD burner, well, you get it.
If a regular SAv2, then TivoToGo (which rocks).
MP3 streaming.
Galleon (for RSS, weather, MP3s with cover art, GoogleMaps and satellite, and auto-archiving based on keyword or show title).
I don't bother with digital cable, so I can't comment on the whole cable-box control thing.

I don't know about legality, but its easy enough to kill it. Hit "Clear" when it pops up and it magically goes away.
Doesn't seem like as good a reason to drop 1000 bones on an HTPC anymore, huh?

If you have DTV and wnat the capability to get the most out of your DVR go find yourself a Series 2 DTV DVR. Search the NET for "Hacking series 2 TIVO" and go for it. You will need some comp experience and a little Linux never hurt.
The main reason I hacked my unit was to allow it to be a TRUE DVR with the ability to record AND transfer video files to my PC for post-processing and archiving.
The reason why DTV DVRs have locked USB ports is because DTV and their content providers have an agreement NOT to allow the customer with the ability to do this. This is my one and only gripe with DTV. You think that they would have their customer's best interest at heart.

Do you guys really care if there is a banner on the bottom of the screen for the couple of seconds that you are fast forwarding? I'd be happy to have the ad there if it meant greater financial success for TIVO (meaning they don't go away like replay tv).
I personally have TIVO free (it came with my Toshiba sdh400 tivo/dvdplayer ). Only goes out 3 days, but has all the other features of tivo

That isn't the entire truth, the other features you do not get with Tivo Basic are:
- No Search by Title
- No Browse by Time and Channel
- No Sort by Date/Time and Folders in Now Playing
[*]No Season Pass - No Wish List
- No Smart Recording Options
- No TiVo Suggestions
- No Customize the Program Guide
- No Digital Music and Photos
- No Multi-Room Viewing
[*]No Remote Scheduling
[*]No TivoToGo - Only 1 Program Source Inputs Allowed versus 2
Not everyone uses all those features, I put the 3 most important IMO in bold.
I also have a Toshiba SD-H400 which I still haven't setup yet, it's been in the box for a few months 🙁
My main reason for buying it was NO MONTHLY FEES!. So it sits in the box, all alone and unloved 🙁

They also forget that TiVo, UNLIKE most other for-profit corporations, has contributed much to the "Underground" community, for instance turning a blind eye to hardware hacks (such as disk capacity upgrades) so long as service isn't being stolen. They've even been helpful in confirming architecture info to make these hacks possible. That's much more than MS ever did for anyone...

Yipes... if they do start putting in adds, it's bye-bye Tivo for me. That's one of the reasons I have tivo, to not have to watch adds. If they start forcing me to watch adds (theirs instead of the broadcaster's), I'll ditch Tivo.

I hope you did not take my comments out of context. I don't appreciate you "fixing" my statement because it wasn't broke. As I stated in MY comment I have a problem with DIRECTV NOT TIVO. Tivo is our friend, DTV is NOT. The agreement that I was reffering to was between DTV and their CONTENT PROVIDERS (aka the networks and studios) NOT TIVO.
