Called tivo customer support @ 877-367-8486 to cancel my $12.95 monthly service. Here is a link Text

My reason for canceling was that I was getting rid of my land line phone service and it was too much hastle to hook it up using a USB port.(Broadband via home network etc.)

Other reasons may work too. YMMV

The guy asked me if price was the issue and I said YES. He offered me 6.95/Month for life. I naturally took it!

I don't know if they officially call it a "retention" program .

Not sure if the lifetime $300.00 members have this bargining power.... I seriously doubt it.

that's pretty cool, but I like giving money to Tivo :) I want them to stay in business for a long time.

Will the retention program work if you just have tivo basic which is free? :)

I know you can't change your lifetime sub to a new unit but what happens if the unit you have dies?

Well that is a better deal. I just have TIVO basic free now. $13 a month is a total rip off.

I want Tivo to succeed and I'm hoping they get enough new customers so they could afford to lower the monthly fee to something like $6.95. Then they would get even more customers and so on...

Yeah, I had to upgrade to plus on my Toshiba system (which includes free basic) to qualify for a rebate, and when I canceled, I was offered the same $6.95 a month deal. Although, I turned it down since I'm happy with free basic.

It needs a subscription to work. There is something called Tivo Basic but it's only for a few select models like the Toshiba SH-400 combo DVD Player/Tivo. Tivo Basic gives basic VCR functionality. I think you only get a 3-day program guide instead of the 2 week and there is no Season Pass (which allows you to record the whole season) and other stuff which makes Tivo really useful.

I doubt TIVO will ever let anything new come with free service. Those things sold like hot cakes and TIVO felt they were losing out on a lot of money. Wrong in my case. Either I could get it for free or I would not get it at all.

I just inadvertently got this!

I've been a TiVo owner/subscriber since almost the beginning, and I just recently got in on the FAR price error at BestBuy. Paid the $12.95 plus $6.95 for a couple months until I got the rebate, then called the other night to cancel service on the Series1 that I planned to move into the bedroom and use like a VCR.

The guy offered to change my $12.95 subscription to $6.95, which, coupled with the existing $6.95 for the Series2 unit, only comes out to like a dollar more for the second TiVo! Needless to say, I didn't cancel my sub for the Series1.

Sweet!

I got on the retention plan a few months back. Last month I added a second unit and was told I would get the multi-unit rate of $6.95 on itn too. Now I get my billing and they charged me full price. Called service and was told that I didn't qualify for the multi-unit discount.

Is anyone else in the same boat or are you getting the $6.95 rate on all units?

Well I bought a series 2 when they first came out, what 3 years ago? I paid $250 for my lifetime subscription which averaged out over the years is less than you're paying and it keeps going down every month I keep it. In fact I could sell it right now on ebay for well over what I paid for it.
