TiVo 40hr $49.99 AR Target or $45.99 AR/PM?

Pg8 of my 4/10 Target newspaper circular.

#TCD540040 Series 2 40hr TiVo

$149.99 less $100 MIR. Rebate requires activation and can be seen here.

If you can price match this at a store with a 110% price guaranty, you could save another $5 since the rebate is the same for everyone and I think CC, BB, CompUSA etc all have it for $199.99 before the rebate.

Disclaimer: I do not know exactly which stores have 110% PM policies and mentioned the ones above as possible examples, so please don't come in here and say "you said such and such a store would PM at 110% and they won't." If someone knows which ones do, feel free to post the information. Thanks!

What are the activation requirements/prices for these?
Prices are $12.95/mo or lifetime $299. Check TiVo.com for all the pertinent information.

The activation requirements are all shown in the Terms & Conditions section of the rebate form linked in the OP.

"TiVo* service or TiVo Plus? * service (on DVD products) activation required by 5/31/05 and must be active for at least 30 days in order to be eligible for rebate. TiVo service or TiVo Plus service must be active at the time of rebate processing
to be eligible for rebate. (3) TiVo service or TiVo Plus service required for full functionality. DVRs with TiVo Basic? service are not eligible for $100 rebate. Activate your TiVo service or TiVo Plus service at http://www.tivo.com/activate/."

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.

Do you think Tivo will be around long enough for someone to get their money's worth from the $299 lifetime subscription?

I would bet that they are still around after 2 years, which would be right around where you would break even with the life time subscribtion, BUT the "lifetime" is for that single Tivo unit.

from Tivo.com:

"Of course, hardware products don't last forever and their lifespan will vary among individual products. TiVo makes no representations or warranties as to the expected lifetime of the product aside from the manufacturer's warranty."

Tivo is the biggest joke in the world. What they do not tell you is that the hard disk is running 24/7 so most likely the hard disk will break after 1-2 years. That is how they make the money off the $299 lifetime subscription.

I hope no one is stupid enough to buy a Tivo. Biggest ripoff in the world.

Soo....replace the HD. Or send it to Tivo to repair, even if they swap the thing out, they WILL transfer the sub to the replacement. As I already went through this with them with an older 80hr Series 2 with a lifetime sub.

But if the HD died, you're better off replacing it with a larger one anyway.

Why is it a ripoff? I've Tivo for about 5 months and it's great... especially handy if you've got a baby and juggling time becomes a nessary skill to survive.

The beauty of it is in its simplicity... the user interface's a little sluggish at times but I've had little if any problems with it.

Not to mention that Tivo seems to be doing alright financially and the fact that there's a growing number of open source projects and competitors pretty much copying what Tivo does.

Have you ever used a Tivo? Or MythTv or Beyond TV?

Just replace the hard disk 🙂

My household has 4 TiVos (one's for sale, soon to be 3) ...
40 Hour (for sale) unupgraded
80 hour Humax with DVD Burner - upgraded to 300GB (350 hours)
80 hour - upgraded to 200 GB
80 Hour with DVD player - not yet upgraded 😉

The disk is almost the only thing that ever fails (now that modems have become redundant!), and is a JOKE to replace. To anyone not using a TiVo for ONLY this reason, I feel sorry for you! You're missing out!

In fact, shortbear, I hop you'er not one of the stupid people who comes into the TiVo forums asking "My TiVo runs all the time ... how do I turn it off at night?" 😀

I've been thinking of getting a TIVO, but someone recently told me that they're not all set up to record two shows that overlap in time... like you want to record the 8pm show on one channel at the same time as another show at the same time on another channel... is that true? How do I look for the feature that allows me to record two shows at once? 🙁

Good lord, you're dumb. I've had a Tivo (with lifetime sub) running constantly for almost 3 years now. Hell, it even has 2 drives in it. And so what if a drive fails? I'll just replace it!

Just ignore shortbear. His comment "the hard disk is running 24/7 so most likely the hard disk will break after 1-2 years" indicates that he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. To paraphrase an old song, he's more to be pitied than censured.

If you have a DVR option from your cable provider, it might be a better unit than these standalone TiVos. I know my Comcast unit kills my TiVo unit when it comes to functionality. I can record in HD, record 2 shows at once, or record 1 and still pause another show I'm watching.

Still, TiVo is pretty good if there aren't other options. I've had one for over 4 years now and the drive is still working beautifully.

Then you add on $15/mo to use the darn thing and it's not so hot any more. Can get a nice pacakge over a PCAlchemy.com for $130 with a Tuner/Capture card and SageTV. No monthly fees and it does almost all the same things... heh.

I already have two TiVos which I got the $100 rebates on (not recently though). Does anybody know if I can get a third in the same household and still get a rebate? What if I remove my Toshiba SD-H400 from my subscription and use basic on it?
