$12.95 a month or $300 lifetime. The free Home media option saves $100.

isn't it 99.99 direct from dtv?

No. I believe that would be the DIRECTV DVR with TiVo which is only for use with, you guessed it, DirecTV.

do you need cable?

From TiVo.com "Works with everything: cable, digital cable, satellite, antenna, and combinations."

You do not need cable, TiVo works just fine with OTA stations pulled in with an antenna.
It also works with just about any satellite/cable setup except C-Band - though as noted, if you have DirecTV, get their verson of TiVo for much better integration with your DirecTV setup.

the home media is only a limited trial. if you want it after the trial you still have to pay $99. just found out from tivo. that pisses me off.

That's BS...
The add states that it's a free Home Media Option.
Nowhere on the advertisement does it state it's a trial version.

My gf picked one up and is going to argue it if it's not free.
She called Tivo to verify and the rep she talked to said it should show up.
She verified that it's the full Home Media package.

Even with tax, it was only $10 more than online and she got instant gratification.

This is why you are seeing so many TV capture card threads - eveyone wants a DVR, but a lot of us don't want to pay monthly fees (among other things), so HTPC's are becoming big. Tivo better adapt or they will be marginal within a few years...

Exactly~!

This is why I've moved my PC next to my entertainment center.

I'm currently building another computer but my next one will be an HTPC Box. ;)

How did she get a hold of a live person? I called 877-367-8489 and all I get is darn pre-recorded messages. No help at all!

I'm about to pack my TiVo back in it's box and take it back to BB.

Standalone TiVos have both S-video and composite inputs. I have a digital-cable box plugged into the S-video input on mine. With S-video output, the picture's pretty nice.

I was asking about this before in another thread...I don't see how it makes sense. If you want to use a PC on your TV as a PVR, you need to put your PC next to your TV, correct? Does the PC or your cable box then handle the channel changing?

Also, since you pretty much need to dedicate a PC to do this, I'm not sure I understand how a cheapee $400-$600 + $80-$150 PVR card is less expensive than a $200 Tivo + $299 lifetime service (or free basic service that allows you to do all the PVR stuff like FF, RW, pause live TV, and schedule 3 days of recordings.) I'm not bashing people that do this at all, I just need help in understanding why one way is better than the other.

Well, I've posted on Tivo's help forum and e-mailed their c/s support. So far they all reply about the free trial only.

I'm not going to give up yet, though. I'm stopping by BB on the way home and will try to get to the bottom of this.

I'll update once I find out more.

BB gets the service from Tivo....what do you expect them to do, sign you up and give you a $99 to pay for the media option? You're not going to get anywhere dude...just chalk it up to a mistake and move on.
