So, first off, I'm definitely not as knowledgeable as others when it comes to the legal aspects of titles and such. Anyways, my wife and I just traded in our Camry for a minivan and we got the prices negotiated and where we wanted them. We've signed the paperwork and everything, and the title for the minivan is in the mail to us right now. This is a very reputable dealership in town so I wondered as I went through our lock box why they haven't asked for the title on the Camry. They've sent in the payoff to the lien holder and everything, but I just realized I hadn't given them the title yet. Do they, for some reason, not need it? Should I drive it over? Just thought I'd get some opinions on this.

If there is a lein holder then you don't really have the title.

+1

+2, you never owned the car. The lien holder did. The dealership paid it off and retitled it to them. You're out of the picture and aren't involved.

I have a Certificate of Title in my hands right now with "original" typed at the top. This was mailed to me by the state of missouri. It has a "subject to lien holder" section with the lien holder on it. Is this not the actual title? Just a copy or something?

they do have the real title, its just not the one the dealership wants. they want the new copy without the lien on it.

the lien holder will send the dealer a clear title once the lien is removed from it. they will also send you a lien release form, never lose that sucker.

Wow, I'm confused. I have a Certificate of Title for the Camry in my hands... is this just the registration?

No, it's the title, but it's the title that says you don't really own the car. The dealership went directly to the real owner, the lien holder, and got a clean copy of the title from them.

HA... yeah. It's pretty nice, and has an Infiniti surround sound system in it, so I feel a bit more manly about the decision :D
