But if you don't believe in God or do not wish to do tithing, then donating it to any charitable cause is a very nice gesture indeed.
I'll make sure to give 10% of any money I find on the street to God. Because that's all he's given me. All this other stuff? Oh, I worked for it.
That's pretty selfish....in a Christian mindset anyway.
God gave you the opportunity and ability to get an education and thus a job. Giving 10% back is showing your appreciation of that and helping out others in need.
I always kinda figured my parents gave me opportunity and ability. That's why I'll put them in a real nice home. One with birds for them to watch and stuff.
