My mom, someone I love and respect dearly, suggested that I continuously donate 10% of my income to my church for the sake of charity. Since I don?t really believe in organized religion and don?t think that God is as broke as people make out, I?d like to do something constructive and creative with my 10%. Any suggestions? I thought buying a few homeless people dinner every week would be a good idea but I may not honestly have the time to keep it up. I would donate to charities but I know how much the people up top in those ?charities? make and, well, that sickens me.

well, it's not that God is "broke" or anything like that. Giving 10% is just a way to show respect to God and to give back a little bit of what He has given to you. Of course that is all in the speculation that you believe in God.
But if you don't believe in God or do not wish to do tithing, then donating it to any charitable cause is a very nice gesture indeed.

I think you just created a thread to brag that you're going to be donating money to charity (it's not like you haven't done this before). There are thousands of charities out there. pick one...

Sponser a child through a reliable organization. WorldVision and Compassion International are two that I'm very familiar with (far more familiar with Compassion International, and their overhead is really low.)
We adopt a family for Christmas... you usually get to pick your family type... single mothers is the one I go for and then you buy gifts for them and the kids.. I have my daughter pick out the kids gifts, we wrap them, label them, put in a card with a picture and drop them off.... we have been given the option of actually bringing the gifts, but I haven't done it... yet...
I'm pretty iconoclastic, but I believe that we are socially responsible for our fellows... I believe correct action compels us to engage in charitable acts, I hope to do more in the future.

There may be some huge charities which pay high salaries to some top people, but the overwhelming majority work very hard to keep expenses low. All you need to do is contact a charity you're interested in and ask for their annual report, and you can see for yourself. It would be a mistake to lump them all into one pile.
HotChic's suggestion is a good one. Compassion International makes it possible to sponsor a child for about a dollar a day. If you want to do something closer to home, you could probably find a non-profit organization in your town who would appreciate having someone to help them with computer issues instead of having to pay someone to do it.

Some food bank companies don't pay huge salaries, and the food goes directly to people in need. Here in WA we have Northwest Harvest, which gathers food and donations then supplies food banks throughout the state.
If there is a statewide organization like that in NY you can ask the State Attorney General's Office for what % of donations goes to administration.

Adopting a family for x-mas sounds like a great idea.. i'm not bragging, I feel like it's my social responsibility. I'm hoping that my question will help other people hear of organizations that they've never heard of. I'll check out worldvision and compassion international.
p.s. i don't really think that god is broke.. I'm not entirely sure if i even believe in god, I was just being sarcastic.

Yeah, at some place in the bible it says something along the lines of "For every 10 ears of corn you grow one shall be mine, for every 10 sheep you raise, one will be mine... ... and I will give these to those people who cannot give to me"
If you aren't sure where your church's funds are going, then you should certainly ask. You'd find that many churches give the majority of money away to people who come to them in need.
That's pretty selfish....in a Christian mindset anyway.
God gave you the opportunity and ability to get an education and thus a job. Giving 10% back is showing your appreciation of that and helping out others in need.
Donate to any of these. No church officials get paid from these funds.
