Tis a bit chilly this morning

-20F on my thermometer & that of the other teachers I've been on the phone with, passing on the "school closed" down the chain. Expected -30F wind chills today. A bit crisp outside.

Absolutely gorgeous sunrise on mornings like this. And last night, the sky was so amazingly clear. I stood out there for about 10 minutes staring at the stars. I can't recall them ever appearing brighter. Just within the constellation Orion (not including the arm and the bow), I could count over 30 stars. The moon wasn't out yet, but the starlight was enough to see across the field.

edit: Whoa, didn't expect that to happen - since 6am, the temperature has dropped 2 more degrees. -22F (-30C)

A warm and balmy 7 degrees (F) here, thankfully with no wind chill. In addition, our mercury will go up, not down, throughout the day.

Temperature is expected to go up, but wind chill is expected to go down. No wind at all right now.

Had that below zero air mass here last week.

Nothing closed here.

Woke up this morning, and I set my apt thermostat to 70F+ when I went to bed, and it's showing below 60F when I woke up. WTF? I have forced hot water heat. Is it working? The radiator isn't even warm to the touch. Shouldn't it be at least warm? I turned it up to 80, and I don't hear the pipes making noise, which they normally do when you turn it up. I think my heat is broken!

I normally keep my heat at 65F, and even open the windows a little bit during the winter, because I run F@H, and it heats up my little apt pretty nicely. I shut down F@H last night too, to save power, because my bills are going to be tight next month.

Edit: Maint guy got here, said my heater pipe was frozen. Not everywhere, just below my AC cutout in the wall where my AC is, the cold air came in there and froze the pipe. He's going to get some insulation and put it around the AC. (He's a really good maint guy.)

Wow that's cold... -1F here, and it feels like my face is gonna freeze off. Wind chill doesn't help though.

i still cant believe the close school because its cold in NY. I dont remember it happening when i was in school in NY, and it definitely didnt happen when i was in Maine.

hell we went skiing regularly when the windchill was -50

Bus driver said it was at -7 here in Pittsburgh. I see that it will rapidly warm up to 32 it will feel hot out there.

-9F out here in NH. My kid (21 mos old) freaked out on the way to daycare. Despite having gloves on, he had a serious case of lobster hands after only 5 minutes in the car.

You must be down south...it's still -23F here and it's after 9AM. 😛

I think it's because since everyone rides the bus, it's felt that there's too high of a danger of some little kid getting frostbite while waiting for the bus. And, the -50F windchill factors of 25 years ago are no longer considered -50F - the scale has been recalibrated to be more accurate. But, I went skiing when it was 20 something below with the windchill factor. There are usually at least 1000 skiers (wild estimate) at that resort. When it was that cold, I'd bet there were fewer than 30 skiers, counting myself.

You might be at the end of the run in the building so the water has cooled down too much by the time it reaches your apt. But Murphy's law dictates that the heat will break on the coldest day of the year.

humm didn't realize they changed the WC numbers

also im slightly confused by what you said. if everyone rode the buss frostbite would be a non issue, they cancel it because the kids who don't ride the buss are at risk IIRC. blah blah blah people cant afford proper coats blah blah blah stupidity.

and yes when it got above -30 on the WC the # of people on the mountain doped off significantly. which was great TBH because you could ski everything in 1/2 the time

We had that stretch of ridiculous cold last week, I think we bottomed out about -30 ambient, with -45 wind chill. That was stupid.

30 degrees here this morning, but will drop to about 16 pretty quick. Historically, Feb 17th is the day it starts getting back above freezing. Boy, I'm looking forward to Feb 17th.

Gotta love WNY. Can't wait to get out of this place, 22 years is long enough. Graduating in the spring and moving to where there are jobs...

It was in the low-40's this morning. Wet and foggy as hell.

While the temps don't compare, the comfort level still sucks...that wet cold will cut through most jackets pretty quickly.

(but I still don't have to deal with snow/ice...nor freezing pipes.)
