Hi there,

You have neglected to give us a single piece of information that would aid us in aiding you!

1. Car or truck?
2. Off road or on road?
3. All-season or task specific? (autocrossing/mudding/highway usage/etc)
4. What kind of vehicle?
5. Budgetary restrictions?

Get the point? ;)

BMW 525i
I know a guy who works for Pirelli and a guy who works for Michelin.
They both think the best tires in the world are Michelin.
But, folks here are so smart; I am open to opinions.
And, which Michelin anyway?
I am leaning towards the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus.

The Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus is an excellent all season touring tire. Quiet ride is one of its strongest traits....its the standard tire on many sedans (honda accord, etc.) and on the dodge caravan.

I had these on my 98 Accord Sedan. They are excellent tires. I got 50K out of mine (hard use, too) before they went bald. However, if I were you, with a nice BMW, I'd get something a little more "aggressive".

Those Michelins are "family car" (yes, I'm embarrassed) tires.

I've heard that Pirelli's have problems wearing out of balance, but I can't be sure. They have a good reputation in most performance circles though. I personally prefer Bridgestones. No-one in my family has had a problem with a set of Bridgestones.

I replaced the 15" Michelins on my Sebring convertible with Firestone Firehawks

These things have AWESOME wet traction and pretty darn good on dry, too. I've usually gone with Bridgestone in the past for wet traction (had some Dunlops once and they were very good on wet when new but that lessened.) These Firestones now have about 15k miles on them and they're still as good as when I bought them.

my instinct also, but have you ever driven a 5 series?
It is an aggressive ride. YOu feel and hear every bump.
I would not mind soffening the ride, and the long tread life is such a nice thing.

Michelin is a French company. You really want to be supporting a bunch of cheese eating surrender monkeys?

Unfortunately, I've never had the privelage of driving a 5-Series BMW. I wish. Actually, someday I'd love to own an M5. I can pretty much quote it's specs from memory. *sighhhhhhhhhhhh.....I be poor and I be sad about that*

If you "can feel" all the bumps, that's b/c the vehicle has stiff springs and bushings. Cadillacs have mushy everything. YOu can run over a 55-gallon drum and not even know it...but don't try to fling the car around a corner, lest you become one w/the guardrail. LOL!

good luck, Glen, in your search for the perfect tire for your Shiny BMW. me\<---hopes you take good care of that nice car!

glen, Going with a Michelin tire for a BMW would be a good choice. I'm guessing you're currently running either a tire size of P205/65R15 or P225/60R15. If you check Michelin's site here, they have a tire selector which will run you thru a few options before recommending a tire. As far as Pirelli's are concerned, they are on par with the Michelins, but they are more of a performance tire. I work for a tire shop and I answer questions like this all day long. Feel free to IM me with any questions you have.

M5 that great?
My best friend's dad drives one.
He always has some sort of German car.
He went from some sort of modified Mercedes to a VW Passot to an M5 now.
Maybe he will trade cars with me for the day.

Cool, but if we discuss it here, folks might learn something.
So, how do I knwo what tire size I am running?
I assume it is P225/60R15, but will either size fit?
Where do I look? on the current tires? the manual?
What do you nor mall recommend for a 5 series?

Oh my...well, quite bluntly; the BMW M5 is THE 4-door sports car/sedan. Period. It even has a 6-speed manual...no auto is available. The only thing that comes close in terms of raw power/handling/comfort/amenities is the E55 Mercedes Sedan. That's why an M5 is about 80K at your local BMW dealer. :) God drives a Black BMW M5...I'm convinced.

The "touring" tire will be slightly wider a lower aspect ratio(relative sidewall height).
