Tired of sharing a web server, anyone interested in a dedicated box?

Looking for 2-3 people to share a dedicated linux box with a 2mb line. Should cost $90/mo total unless we're talking cpanel and all that. $35 extra per mb if we need it. I have a line on a good colocation opportunity that's local to me (Bay Area, CA.) I can throw together a fast box, maybe an athlon 2400?

Anyone interested in exploring this? Looking for a minimum 1 year commitment.

Sorry, I'm tired. :confused:

Dedicated IP, $90 total split amongst the crew. I'd have to look at hardware and come up with a reasonable stipend to cover my costs but it wouldn't be huge. Depends on what we want. Security on the box level is up to us, beyond that there's good hardware at the switch and host.

I'd probably prefer red hat 7.3 unless there's objections to it.

I'm currently hosted with Dathorn (paying $20/mo), but might be interested in something like this. It really depends on what sort of speeds I see out of the 2mb line, which I guess in turn would depend on what everyone else is using it for. Any monthly bandwidth limits on this? How would nameservers work (does the coloc run them)?

You're tired of sharing a web server, so you want to get a dedicated server but want to share it with other people. What exactly are you gaining here? :)

Yeah I'm with Dathorn too. :D

2MBit line w/ no cap, that's huge unless you're running a pr0n store or have 5 copies of battlefield 1942 server running. The nice thing about this setup is the $35/mo extra per mb, in case we need something crazy. I've got thoughts of running a game server but it's all about mutual respect, the capability of the box, etc. Last I looked at my Dathorn box there were 54 accounts pulling mysql around and making my site dead. :(

nameserver would be a couple dedicated boxes at the people they colo with I think, I'll get more info as this idea heats up.

I want to share a fast box with 3 people max vs the 54 I share it with now. I want root access as well. :D

It's also about the box specs and not paying a premium for memory and cpu that cost $200, that's where they get you on managed colo. I might wind up going that way for convenience unless I get a partner that's uber-geek in teh penguin arts.

Well, put me on the list of people who would be interested, especially if I'd be getting the same 50gb I'm getting from dathorn right now. ;) I've managed a debian server before as well, though I wouldn't say that I'm a linux geek. ;)

Oh and having the box located right up the street is bonus points. I know the guy that runs the hosting company, too (we hate one another, but it's copacetic from a business perspective. )

Ok, naptime for the sockless one. I'll check this thread for people interested, if it's overwhelming maybe I can install 2 boxes. :D

1MBit = 300gb a mo, roughly. So under this scenario we'd be dividing up 600gb, although it's flawed logic because I don't think we're burstable. I'll look more into this.

Hard drives are cheap, we could put a pair of 100 gig'ers in the box if we make it ourselves. I have an abit raid athlon mobo (forget the moniker, its about a year old.) Has a promise controller so it should have linux drivers(?)

Need sleeeeppp...

I would be interested in sharing a web server but only under these conditions:

[*]1) A quality dedicated web host provider such as ServerMatrix.com (a division of ThePlanet.com)
[*]2) Although it is "managed", I would like an experienced system admin who is available at least 12 hours a day.
[*]3) Celeron 1.7 or faster machine, cPanel isn't really necessary but DirectAdmin would be nice (efficient, stable, secure and cheaper than an owned cPanel license), heck I would even settle for Ensim Pro.

That's a good idea but you never really know who is sharing your box and what they're doing. I tend to trust the AT crowd more as there's a bit more history and dare I say... respect? :D

If you are looking to spend 90 why not go with $10 more and get a box from servermatrix.com. 750GB per month, decent specs, Linux or Windows... You should be able to run a BF1942 server and your webserver off it if you wanted with the 10mb/s connection. Plenty of transfer to spare.

I am curious what you mean by $25/month per extra mb? If you go over 1 megabyte of bandwidth you pay $25?

It's $35, and it's a MBit. The server, under this scenario, would be capped at 2MBit per second, and could utilize that pipe for whatever it needs. If we needed more then it's $35 per MBit after that.

2MBit at 100% utilization = roughly 600gb per month.

Because it's a craptastic celeron box for that price. Servermatrix is on my short list, though.
