Tire tread on my back right tire came right off

Over the weekend I was driving my company car to the hotel when I noticed it was shaking fairly violently on the interstate. I stopped the car, did a quick check, and did not notice anything. Got back in and it started shaking violently, and then as soon as I was about to pull over the tread on my back right tire came completly off. Luckily the tire did not deflate, and I was only about a mile from the hotel. Just wanted to talk about that.

How could the tread just come off?

I dont really know. I am just glad it happened at a time I did not have to be anywhere in particular, plus we had a full size spare.

Happens all the time to large trucks. Out here I see them along the side of the road all the time. Especially during the hot summer months.

Wow i'm amazed, I've never heard of tread just detaching itself. You're luck you weren't in a serious accident - go buy a lotto ticket!

Retreaded tires are common for trucks as they cover so much ground. They just glue new treads on when the old one wears off.

Delamination. You could probably get a free set of tires if you b!tch at the tire company (think Firestone debacle). Did you keep the tread part?

It's worth a try no matter what happens.

It happens from time to time. Under-inflated tires will do that. I was in my parants vehicle when I was younger when the tred separated and a piece of the tire was smaking against the wheel well making loud banging noises.

Truckers call the large chunks of tread remains "alligators". Sometimes the tread just lets go ("bad recap") and sometimes, especially in the summer, they explode like bombs. I've been in a truck when that happens--not fun.
