On my jeep I have 4 snow tires on, one of them needs replacing asap as its balding in the middle. The rest have wear but good for another few thousand miles. I have no idea why this one is balding faster but that doesn't matter, I have a spare tire completely unused (standard highway tire). My question is can I just throw the new tire on and go about until the other 3 need changing or should I just replace them all now? The new tire is going to be about 1" larger in diameter than the others.

Just get all new. I wouldn't run tires of different diameter for any long period of time. Have you been rotating your tires every now and then?

On a 4WD or an AWD, different diameter tires are going to screw something up, namely the transfer case, or whatever mechanical thing distributes the power to the front and rear differentials.

Buy 4 new ones.

Sounds like it was over inflated. I am guessing but its on the rear(or spent most of its life there) is it not?

If the other tires are really close then replace all 4. Costco has like $70 off a set of tires. Also check out treaddepot.com, tires.com, and tirerack.com.

But replace at least 2. If you have different tires on the same axle then it can cause more wear on the Diff as one side will always be spinning faster then the other.

He's got 4wd and if he ever plans on using it, all four tires should be about the same. A 1" difference won't be good for stuff.

I was guessing that if one of tires is bald and the others were low he was probably not doing to much off-roading. Unless being towed through the dirt is what kids call off-roading today. :awe:
