mine seems to drop 10psi every 2 weeks

I had something like that before, turned out that there was a nail in my tire. The flat top of the nail sealed the hole somewhat pretty well, and so the leak was very slow. I simply went to a tire shop and they used a patch on the inside to seal it after removing and prepping the area. Patch is preferred over the plug method, and unless you have the necessary equipment, you have to go to a tire shop for it.

At all temperatures the pressure is relative.

yeah, to atmospheric pressure, which changes with the weather

it isn't like the tire pressure has to be exactly XX.XXXX psi

as long as it is close to a band, it'll be ok

Bingo! The air keeps the tire shaped properly. If one wants to get really anal, they'd have a compensator that would increase tire pressure as load increased. So if a 350 pound horizontally challenged person hops in, the pressure goes up! :Q Too much deflection = bad. Consequently if the tires are inflated to their max load rated pressure and are carrying significantly less weight they wear faster in the center. Some people find that they get brand new tires and one will still lose air. Have your rims checked because they can leak too!
