Tire kaput

The tire is about 9/32nds on the other side of the axle. Would we need to buy two new tires? This is on a FWD car, and the tire was on the back.

you're supposed to always buy in pairs.

if you really don't want to i would put the rears on the fronts so the fronts are equal

Yep, thats what I thought. The fronts are equal. The tire that got flat and cut open was the Rear right tire.

But since the other tire is so new, we might just only replace the one.

Tire was in the rear per the OP and the other rear tire is almost new. On a FWD car, rear tires do not wear at anywhere near the rate that the front tires do. You can safely replace just the one tire. Just try to get the same make and spec of tire.
