check out ubuntuguide.org. I don't think it's updated yet for Dapper, but most of the guide will probably work the same for Dapper. The few parts I've followed have worked fine anyway.
edit: I just checked it and it is updated, but they've also drastically changed the layout (using the standard mediawiki/wikipedia layout now). I liked the old layout much better. Although it is also drastically expanded beyond what the old one covers.
If you want to improve the look, check out www.gnome-look.org (or kde-look.org for kubuntu). It sure can be made pretty with a little personallization. I prefer the look and feel of kde, so I'm using kubuntu, but played with both a little and the appearance of both can be customized a lot. I've been very impressed so far with the distro itself. It is the first distro where all the hardware on my laptop has worked out of the box.
Found out one thing...............Linux boot loaders don't know how to deal with the new bootloader packaged with Vista. Had to find out so I installed and upon reboot got nothing but Windows bootloader..............
Graphics wise I didn't do much...I like how it is. I changed the top bar to not extend to touch each side so it sits in the middle. I also changed the color to white. Beyond making fonts looks incer...thats all really
Now Breezy was a different story I just didn't like almost anything. It looked so rought to me, the brown was just too ugly, and the icons were horrid. Dapper is defintitely much sharper that I enjoy keeping the default.
Bah, I'm having a retarded issues with compiz. I've got everything working except Alt+Tab. It was working, but once I rebooted it stopped, now it does nothing.
It's probably unrelated, but maybe you should stop the dock plugin. Compiz was crashing for me regularly with dock on, who knows what else it could mess up. After that, I haven't had a single crash with Compiz and it's pretty stable surprisingly.
Well, I got it to work...can't exactly tell you which of the 1000 things I did made it work. Anyways...when I have one window in focus, the one in the background darkens. How do I adjust that? Which plugin handles that?
