Put on one coat. If you can stil lsee the old paint throguh it, put on another. If the room is a bright color right now, put down primer. If it's close to white, you shouldn't need primer.

Hey, I just got finished painting a room red. (No redrum jokes, please.) The walls were white to begin with. It needed a GREY primer, and two coats of paint before it looked right. It was the expensive paint too (Glidden if my memory is correct).

Red is one of those difficult colors. The amount of trouble and number of coats depends alot on the color. We did a light brown room, and it looked great after one coat. Find someone smart at Home Depot to make a recommendation on the specific color you are doing.

Cheers.

You can always get primer tinted slightly and use that first. Most of the time primer is not required unless you did some patching you have new walls. Primer such as Kilz works great for stain blocking too. Red will definately take 2 coats if not 3 to get it looking good.

Always use primer! Its not only for cover, but also for sealing. It the wall hasn't been painted in a while, if you only use top coat the wall will absorb top coat like hell. You'll save money in the long run if you just prime it.

Really depends on what color it is now. Primer is onyl needed when covering up a darker color to paint over it with a lighter one. If the walls are white now, then primer woudl be useless. And as for 1 coat of paint or 2, all depends on how heavy you paint. Put on one coat, let it dry. If you can see spots where the original wall color is showing through, then put on a second coat or hit up those spots..

Exactly what I was thinking. Our master bed/bath was a dark, almost plum red when we moved in. Since we were going with a tan-ish color, primer was a definite must. It definately helped around the edges, since it looked as if they tried panting the house in 1 weekend (ie, a piss poor job).

Our Master bedroom is Pottery Red by Benjamin Moore. We had professionals do it, and they used a grey primer and 3 coats of paint.

the guy at home depot said i would need a primer since red can be a tricky color, so ive started using the primer which is a medium grey. i still havnt got the paint yet. whats a relatively cheap brand? im not too worried about long lasting paint as im only gonna have this house for 2 years, just need it to look the color its supposed to and prefferably not more that 2 coats. i checked out Benjamin Moore paint and for the color i wanted it was like 38 bux for the high quality and 27 for the lowest.

How is Behr paint? any others?

Wash the walls before you paint (just like your mom would for spring cleaning). The paint will sick better/peel less over time if the walls were clean to begin with.

The WalMart-branded paint has always worked well for me - though I've never tried doing a radical color change like you're planning. But the hints you're getting are all right - prep is everything!
