tips on painting a room...?

Always use primer! Its not only for cover, but also for sealing. It the wall hasn't been painted in a while, if you only use top coat the wall will absorb top coat like hell. You'll save money in the long run if you just prime it.

Really depends on what color it is now. Primer is onyl needed when covering up a darker color to paint over it with a lighter one.

Hey, I just got finished painting a room red. (No redrum jokes, please.) The walls were white to begin with. It needed a GREY primer, and two coats of paint before it looked right. It was the expensive paint too (Glidden if my memory is correct).
Red is one of those difficult colors. The amount of trouble and number of coats depends alot on the color. We did a light brown room, and it looked great after one coat. Find someone smart at Home Depot to make a recommendation on the specific color you are doing.
Cheers.

the guy at home depot said i would need a primer since red can be a tricky color, so ive started using the primer which is a medium grey. i still havnt got the paint yet. whats a relatively cheap brand? im not too worried about long lasting paint as im only gonna have this house for 2 years, just need it to look the color its supposed to and prefferably not more that 2 coats. i checked out Benjamin Moore paint and for the color i wanted it was like 38 bux for the high quality and 27 for the lowest. How is Behr paint? any others?
