jerry lewis used to have a great idea for recording people talking about him - "accidentally" leave a briefcase after a meeting and have a tape recorder in it

then come back 5 minutes later after "remembering" you left it there

Yeah.

AFAIK, it's illegal to record people's conversation in California unless they have consented. It depends on the state.

In California, all parties to any confidential conversation must give their consent to be recorded. For calls occurring over cellular or cordless phones, all parties must consent before a person can record, regardless of confidentiality. Both civil and criminal penalties are available to victims of illegal recordings.
