Hey all, I am 17 and have been looking for a job for over a year now with no luck at all. I'm located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

I am just looking for a easygoing minimum wage job to earn a few bucks for myself while still going to school full-time. I'm certainly qualified to sell/repair technology at stores like The Source by Circuit City and Future Shop (like a Canadian BestBuy) but I have no luck at all.

It's always the 'please submit your resume for the manager'.

I'm hardly shy and think of my self as friendly and I love to help people.

Job Tips? Resume Tips? Should I employ a cover letter? Should I start to nag bosses?

Any help much appreciated! Cheers! 🙂

just keep trying and dress nice when you go to apply.

i've seen kids in the mall dressed all ghetto and crap asking managers for applications and what not.

i have been working since I was 14, was always nice being a sophomore in highschool with some extra cash.

You need to network. I'm sure one of your relatives or friends knows someone who manages a store, or works at a store and can put in a good word with the manager.

Another quick question.

Should I put "references upon request" or give out my previous managers cellphone numbers right on the resume?

"easygoing"? Aren't you a little young and inexperienced to dictate your job requirements? Hit the fast food joints, someone will hire you.

just pick a place and go in and keep asking, if they say they are not hiring now then move on. Look nice put alot of apps in and dont be picky, maybe go for jobs that no one else wants, like a meat packing plant hehe

Upon request. For min. wage job, most places won't care to check, and if they really need to they'll just ask you.

I'm not picky at all. Most min-wage jobs are easygoing in the first place.

That's the problem. Nobody calls me back after I've applied

QFT. Trust me, if you all you do is put on a polo shirt, nice pants, and some nice shoes, you'll probably get the job over all of the other clowns that are applying.

Also, be professional. Speak clearly and intelligently. Shake hands. I would be willing to bet that 90% of the applicants for the same job won't do either of those things, so when you do it, it'll look really good.

So I've got on nice sweater and some casual jeans (there was really nothing better, i admit I dont dress casual normally)

I've got a nice buzzcut from last week.

edit: my pops just lent me a polo shirt

Got my swag on 🙂

Thanks for the tips. They've been very helpful. Any more ideas would be much appreciated too!

resume? what?

no one needs a resume for a 17 year old with no job experience. just go fill out applications and bug people. if you make someone think you're not retarded and they need help, you'll probably get a job.

Restaurants. If you can't get a job there then you might as well get your coffee can and cardboard sign ready and start growing a beard.

Same thing I tell all of my friends who also can't "find" work... Suck it up and pick up a hammer. Manual labor isn't going to kill you.

Flip some burgers, buss some tables, whatever it takes.

Harry: I can't believe we drove around all day and there's not a single job in this town, there's nothing, nada, zip!
Lloyd: Yeah, unless you wanna work 40 hours a week!

Trying to find a job as a tech @ a place like Best Buy or Future Shop is a good idea, the problem is the market is flooded with people who fancy themselves qualified to "sell/repair technology".

I'm not saying stop trying, but don't limit yourself. If they won't hire you as a tech, try to get on as a sales associate.

Grocery stores are also almost always hiring young folks as "courtesy clerks" "bag boys" or whatever you want to call them. That's what I did in high school.
