help! i switched to standard pc, redetected everything, and still have irq9 with 6-8 things on it. what next? this is on a msi ms-6309 (via) mobo.

yeah bump, this thread's great. I tweaked my Win2k pro in the last 20 minutes while reading the thread like I wouldn't have done so in a week normally.

Here's a few tips.

Windows Key + F = Find GUI
Windows Key + R = Run GUI
Right-Click on the windows Clock -> select toolbars -> click Address.
This will add an address bar to your Taskbar. The address bar can be used for launching website, a command prompt, and launching applications(ex: "winword" launches Word)

Learn how to use Windows Installer Files. Windows Installer files can help make installing, reinstalling, and removing application completely very easy. Read this document from "Windows 2000 Magazine" to get the full picture of what I am referring to.

Oh yeah, I just thought of one more.

I always move my My Documents to point to a location off my System Partition. You can change the default location store of the my documents folder by...

Right-Click My Documents Folder -> Select Properties -> Select MOVE -> choose your new store location.
 
I'm just wondering about one tiny thing that I got used to in 98. When I delete things I usually hold down shift so it will really delete it and not go to the recycle bin, but I just upgraded to Win2k and now I gotta double click if I hold down shift to get it to delete. I know it's a tiny petty little thing but I was wondering why this is or if I can change it?

How to disable automatic sharing of drives in W2K.

When logging in as Administrator in Windows 2000, you may have noticed that by default your partitions are shared something along the lines of: C$, D$, admin$, etc...
To disable this automatic sharing of drives, do the following:

In the Registry find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\

Create a new DWORD value in Parameters called ?AutoShareWks? and set the value to 0.

Reboot, log in as Administrator and your drives are no longer shared.

This one is for sysadmins. If you have to maintain multiple servers in your network, you may want to load Terminal Server on all of these and then use the Win32 Client form your win98/Me/Nt/Pro system to maintain them. You have to set the Terminal Server in Application Mode so you can do SP installs and stuff like that.
 
I couldn't get one of my CDs to play audio, either by enabling of digital audio, or by a standard cable. However, reading this thread did remind me to turn on DMA (33), and now it works fine with both the standard cable method, and with the digital audio method. Go figure.

As a bonus, I can now read audio from my CD-RW as well, because I turned on digital audio for it. (Both my CD-ROM and DVD-ROM have digital out hooked up to my SB Live! so I turn off the digital audio option in Windows 2000 to save CPU cycles. The CD-RW has no digital output.)

Now, for my Promise Ultra66 card, DMA66 is enabled by default right? My hard drives are on that card.
 
Microsoft has a list of CD-ROM drives that are known to have problems with Digital Audio Extraction (which was discussed earlier in this thread).🙂

YoungFart, actually the reason I was so intent on keeping this Panasonic CR-584-B was because of its perfect digital audio extraction. Beats the Plextors with no added circuitry, and this 12X drive was even cheap when I bought it many, many years ago. This thing is leaps and bounds better than the Pioneer 104S I bought, initially to replace it.

Does anyone know how I can just change 1 irq in Win2k? I don't have that apsi(whatever) thingie.
My nic card is shared with my video card, and I would like to change it.
