Sweetness. Thanks for the IRQ tip. I have my Geforce 2, NIC, and SB Live all on the same IRQ. Not the best for gaming performance.

In Windows 2000, how can you find out if your video card, or any other device for that matter, is sharing an IRQ with another device? Can I just look 'manually' under My Computer etc.?

And when choosing Standard PC, do you loose the hybernation feature of W2k, which is think is fantastic btw. It's so much better than standby IMHO. And it actually, usually, works well.

Cheers for any replies and thoughts,

Thanks guys,
tried all that I could use.
Only that the trick from GTB55447 about the ATA66 use on my W2K system was already enabled by the driver that came with ABIT's mobo (SE6). Put it in anyway. Can't hurt.
Also GAZZA's Irq resetting was not anything as described with W2K. I assumed this is for W98 also.

Coming from the Bayou land,
Disis good dat you learned folks wood taut uses who are so nu.
Tanks.
😀🙂😎😉

Unfortunately no version of Windows takes advantage of ATA/100 yet. The best you can do is get ATA/66 performance from your ATA/100 setup.

Tip 1 : Clear Paging File At Shutdown : To enable this open the following regisry key:

HKey_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Memory Management

Select the value ClearPageFileAtShutdown and set it to 1 to enable. However with this setting enabled may slow down the shut-down process significantly.

Tip 2 : Add/Remove Snap In for Win2k : Bring up Microsoft Management Console (MMC) by type in "MMC" in the Start/Run box. This will open a blank MMC. Then select Add/Remove Snap In from the Console menu, and select the items you wish to use. You will probably want to add Defragmenter, Services, Event Viewer and Device Manager as a minimum.

Regarding that IRQ/ACPI trick...

My computer already *is* a Standard PC, not a ACPI blah blah blah.
However all my IRQs are still shared!

What can I do?

^^^ A bumpy here, a bumpy there, and now everybody's happy 😀 😀. This thread should be read by a lot of people here!

I tried the trick changing my PC to Standard PC in control panel. Now, I have two Standard PC entries under computer. Can I remove one of them or is that normal?

Another little useful utility to use is StartupCPL which gives back some startup control. http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Works great!

Has there been listed services which can safely be turned off?
Here are some of the services you may be able to deactivate without trouble.
Alerter
Notifies selected users and computers of administrative alerts. This is not
required on standalone workstations or networked systems where administrative
alerts are not used.
Task Scheduler -- This schedules weekly defrags and the like. Unless you are too lazy to start that kind of stuff up on your own, you can probably set this one to Manual.
Uninterruptible Power Supply -- This service manages your UPS -- if you don't have one, set it to manual or disable it entirely.
Indexing Service
Used to index files on disk for faster searches. If this isn't a feature you
don't use often, you can disable it.
IPSEC Policy Agent
Used only for IP-based security features, which is useful if you're doing things like VPN connections to or from the computer in question. If you're not using IP security, this can be turned off without problems.
Messenger
Sends and receives messages transmitted by administrators or by the Alerter
service. If you turn off Alerter, you can turn off Messenger as well.
Remote Registry Service
This allows your system's Registry to be remotely edited by a trusted user.
If this isn't something your see happening on your system, hit the OFF switch for this service.
Removable Storage Manager
It's only useful if you're using removable storage (as the name would indicate). If you have no Zip, Jaz, optical disk or tape drives in your computer, you can disable this without trouble.
Telephony
Governs TAPI support for programs that use it, such as terminal programs or
programs that use IP-based voice connections. If you don't use a modem, you
can turn this off without losing anything.
I also shutdown the computer browser and the server as my machine is not networked. You must also set the start setting to manual or disabled else 2000 will start the service up the next time you reboot.

LANMAN error fix: Event 2506 When Starting Windows 2000
Locate the IRPStackSize value under the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanserver\Parameters\IRPStackSize
On the Edit menu, click DWORD.
Type 11, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor, and then restart Windows 2000.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To fixed damaged system files:
SFC /Scannow
At dos prompt, type the above and enter. SFC will fix all damaged system files. If running SP-1 you might wish to reinstall the service pack.

Sorry if any of this is redundant.

Yes you can remove one of the Standard PC drivers. Open both up and one will say this device is not in use or Drivers not installed or something like that. Erase that one of corse 🙂

I tried the IRQ trick changing my PC to Standard PC in control panel and now most of my hardware has separate IRQ's. Game performance has smoothed-out on my P3-733/GeForce-DDR but now the studid PC won't shut down automatically... I have to switch it off. Should I try changing the PC back in control panel?

TIA, Mitch

Olias I had the same problem.... here is how you fix it. Open up Device manager... go to view... show hidden devices. Then open up Non-Plug and Play Devices... Find Microsoft ACPI Driver... DONT disable or uninstall that doesnt work. Go into Properties... then driver.... there is a pull down menu to tell windows when to start this driver... Set it Disabled.... Reboot and go back into it.... the driver will still be there and thats ok... go back into properties and where it says status make sure it says Unavailable. After that you need to install a new driver... manually go in and add NT APM/Legacy Support... It will install something called NT APM/Legacy Interface Node.... reboot and everything should be all good. BTW you can NOT install the NT APM/Legacy if the Microsoft APCI driver is running.

CD Drives and Digital Audio

Cool Stuff!
New feature in Win2000 for CD drives. You can enable digital audio playback.
Now you no longer need a cable going to your sound card.

Go into device manager and in the properties for the CD drive go to the
properties tab. Mark the box "Enable digital audio.

Now you can playback CDs from your CD Writer or CD ROM.
