Tips and tricks for a trip to Vegas

Well lodging is out of the way (129 bucks a night at the Riviera for 10/5-10/7, thanks to a Fatwallet thread, not too shabby) but now I need some advice on what to do while there, so I figured a different thread was in order.

Specifically, how to get these legendary 9 dollar buffets with lobster and prime rib or free drinks and comped meals while gambling I always hear about. Surely someone who's been there knows a few tricks of the trade for a weekend out there. Any of your sage knowledge is appreciated!

Put it all on Red.

Isn't that the last thing you do? Like after you've lost 6 grand, lost the kid's college savings, and done unspeakable things to a hobo for a sandwich? Every terribly Vegas story ends with whoever putting it all on Red.

You're absolutely right. This is why you should put it on black instead.

we did well on the big wheel of fortune slot machines. not sure how to get the free stuff, but go hang out in the big casinos, use there pools and such. its a fun town even if you don't spend a lot.

i was in vegas a few weeks ago. try to hit up all the big casinos on the strip. a lot of walking but i think it's worth it. if you want to go to any of the big nightclubs, get there early or be on the vip list. otherwise you'll be waiting in line for almost 1.5 hours. don't forget to play some of the machines at the airport. i was playing video poker on some of the machines at my departure gate and made $300 off a $20 in about 10 minutes.

If you want free drinks, play the slots closest to the bar. If you want to actually have a decent chance of winning, play blackjack (100 or 500 max bet tables). I've only gambled at the Grand in Biloxi, but I won about $2,000 in 3-4 hours playing $25-50 a hand. You have a better chance of winning the fewer people playing with you, so look for the least crowded table, and if more people join, find a different table.

double down in BJ when you see two picture cards.

I have no idea what that means, nor do I know what splitting means, which apparently you shouldn't do if you have two 5s. My gambling experience basically consists of losing several hands of Texas Hold 'em.
