Tipping

We don't go out nearly as often for food/beverage now as compared to pre-COVID times. Pre-COVID it was about 3 times a week. Not to sit down restaurants, etc., but usually one of the local breweries (there are over 40+ within 10 miles of my house), some that have food in house, but most typical were food trucks (the brewery scene has created a lot of excellent food trucks).

I typically was a cash person, no tab, no forgetting to close it, leave my card, etc. (also didn't want an audit trail of how much I actually spent on beer) but I always tipped in cash (pitcher on the bar). You go to the bar, order your beer, pay and go back to your table. Beer tender typically got a 10 - 15% for pulling two beers and setting them in front of me.

At times, I would put it on a card, as I failed to stop at the ATM, or had family/friends I was treating, so they just put it on my tab. When closing my tab, it comes up with tip option. Usually 15%, 20%, or and amount. For bar service only, not table service, 15% is fine. (They need to make a decent living also). For sit down service, and good service, 20 - 25% minimum (I'm not a piker or an asshole)

Now some places "prefer" plastic I guess because of COVID, etc. so that's fine. I have noticed that the tip choices at some now start at 20%, perhaps a sign of some places are struggling to hire staff.

A couple of weeks ago we went to a brewery we had never been to in a different city, on a Friday evening. The place was crazy busy, 5 food trucks in the lot, tents for local artisans to sell their stuff (this was a week before Christmas), and I ran a tab. Every time I went back to the bar for more beer, the guy behind the bar remember my name for the tab. He also remembered my daughter was on my tab. (remember, we are all wearing masks). Yea, he got 25% when I settled the tab.

It is rare that I tip below 25%. I mean, one would need to be a zombie to get less. And if you piss me off I still tip 15% but I will leave you a nasty note on the receipt. I do not tip by cash because it is an extreme rarity I have cash on me.

Always used to tip 20% minimum, rounding up to nearest dollar pre-covid for dine-in. Still do but I think I've eaten at a restaurant maybe 3 times since early 2020? Never used to tip for take out but I tip heavily every time now. Essential workers dealing with anti-mask idiots. Typically $8 on a $24 order so 33%. When I used to go to bars it was always $1 per drink.

My wife and I got sushi the other night at this dive sushi restaurant....every month it's a different name. We've been there a few times after name changes when they don't have a license to sell alcohol yet....(if that tells how often they've changed their sign or ownership)

The food and service was decent enough. We got our bill and it had tip calculations on the bottom of the tab... They listed calculations for 10%, 15%, 20% and then 30%.... My wife and I both laughed at the 30% because we know most cheapos aren't going to do that. We tipped our server on our card and then my wife dropped whatever cash she had in her pocket to the sushi chefs. The place was empty, so we always feel bad to see restaurants missing patrons.

We almost exclusively do pickup when getting food from a restaurant these days. Never used to tip for pickup. Now I might do ~10% but the food places around here have kept pretty steady and I haven't noticed any closures in the past year

I decline to comment on this topic for AT LEAST the 15th time. 🙄

(I'd rather re-visit the freaking plane on a conveyer-belt or the mouse in the dang AC)

Went to Golden Corral last week and paid for my lunch and another friends.

I gave the woman who was refilling our drinks a $5. tip as soon as she brought me a water to start and she came back very often.

Went to brunch with a different friend; at a local small diner yesterday and tipped $6 on a $25 with tax total.

I try to tip the wait staff well, especially when they do a decent job.

Its remarkable how a bartender will pick you out of a crowd in a nano-second for the entire night provided you throw a $10-$20 extra tip in with the first round! (depending on how many drinks you order)
