Tipping the Chinese delivery man? (updated)

I found out that one of our favorite Chinese restaurants from our old neighborhood deliver by car now, so they can come to our neighborhood (~60 blocks == 3 miles in upper Manhattan away). I tipped the guy what came to be around 10% of the delivery charge. He was pissed! Since when are delivery guys supposed to be tipped more than that?

(yes I know there have been zillions of tipping threads)

Edit: order total around $25, drive is ~10 minutes by highway with no traffic (it was like 10pm, so there was none)

Edit2: 4/28 Ordered from the same place... different driver, phew! This dude didn't come into the building though b/c he couldn't park and was afraid of a ticket for double-parking. I still gave him a good tip, because I didn't want to be called a cheapass by ATOT again. :D

For normal delivery, thats not that far. For Manhattan delivery via car, that's fvcking hell.

It's a 10 minute skip on the West Side Highway -- I just did the drive today myself. Order was around $25. The thing is, when we've ordered from another good Chinese place that delivers by car from further away still (another 20 blocks == another mile) the guy's happy with that amount. What gives?

(Whoever suggested the order was $9... I think it'd be cruel to order < $10 for that distance :D)

In all honesty, for a guy to deliver 3 miles through Manhattan, I wouldn't have given him less than $2, and depending how fast he was maybe even $4-5. But I used to deliver pizzas, so I'm a little more lenient and generous towards delivery drivers.

If you tipped $2.50 for that, then I don't see any reason why the guy should be pissed.

I usually tip $5 for a $12-$14 pizza order. The higher tip always pays off. Everytime I order pizza, I get awesome service. I know one of the delivery drivers there, and they do keep track of the good tippers. Those people ALWAYS get their pizza first.

For your $25 order, I would have tipped around $7.50. $2.50 was way too low.

A tip is just that, a tip.

It is not a requirment as much as that sucks for the driver.

Isn't 15% what you are supposed to pay a table server ? If so, then it seems delivery guy should get less % IMO. I am curious -- who tips on carryout?

Thats very true. However, so is the requirement that you get the food to the customer within a certain time frame. I have seen some people who tip crappy get mediocre service at best. I had a friend who worked at Dominoes that had a hour response time. There were drivers who would deliver to certain houses and take almost 58 minutes to deliver the pizza. Then, it was just warm enough for them to collect the money for the product.

I am a firm believer that if you set a precidence for tipping well, you are going to get great service. If you don't tip, don't expect great service.

Actually, they should get the same IMO. Especially when you factor in the cost of gas, delivery time in the car, wear and tear on the car, and the fact they get paid like wait staff do.

Nonsense. These people live on tips. They wouldn't deliver if there was no expectation of a tip. You are supposed to tip at least 15% unless they were awful.
