I normally tip well at around 20 - 25%. If the server sucks then I give a much smaller tip.

I don't understand tipping when the service sucks. That's saying you are ok with crappy service and that server will continue to give crappy service cus they know they'll still get tips.

I don't like not tipping. I would say that I give a very small tip like a buck or 2 over the actual amount.

I tip, but typically on service. Unless a waiter/waitress fucks up an order royall and is unattentive to my needs completely, I tip. It is a thankless job.

Damn, you guys are cheapskates.

If the service really, really blows, I'll leave a buck or something. Other than that, I leave 15-20%.

I started reading this thread because the title said "servers" and I was thinking Oooh I'm into servers... then I realised /Embarrassment

I only tip if the service is good, last year when I was in america I didn't tip "enough" in a place in chicago and the woman chased me out of the bar and told me theres some kind of mistake... It was insane, I told her that tipping is a custom, not mandatory and that if I knew she was going to chase after me I wouldn't have left a tip at all.

Leaving a small tip, say a buck, is a better means of driving the point home. They know you didn't forget.

I live in Oregon and its a required minimum wage state. I usually pay with cash so if service is adequate I'll leave them the change they bring me back from whatever I pay with. If it's great service I'll whip out a few extra bills. I never really pay attention to the percentage. I'm pretty sure I've given tips more than my bill once or twice but the service was worth it.

this thread is moot since all servers are required to at least make min. wage.

Min. wage for servers is lower than the normal minimum wage. When I worked payroll a few years back, minimum wage for servers was $2.63 /hr, at least here in MA. Don't know if that's gone up since then or not...

The difference is in how the server is paid the minimum wage. MOST states allow the employer to pay the server a "sub-minimum" wage of $2.13/hour and let the employee's tips make up the difference, however, many states require the employer to pay the server the full minimum wage and the tips are over and above that...allows servers to actually make a decent living.

It's probably works out the same in the end though except at places like buffets and other cattle car restaurants where the clientele feel no tip is deserved.

There are a few that stiff high end waiters too with the thought process that since they are paying $50 for a plate, the tip should be included.

That's a kick in the teeth too, since they may only see 4 tables a night, or less, what needing time to give them great service and all.

There are two couples in our circle of friends that we insist on splitting the checks from as a group.

Not only do they forget 'tax' but they think tipping is out of style in today's world.

They quote all the other places were tippng is not required and the food is cheaper.

*sigh*

As someone who has never slightly, remotely, relied on tips to make a living...

This still bothers the hell out of me.

I hate to say it but your friends are cheap and trying to justify it.

OP is an insecure asshole who is abnormally preoccupied with how much $ some workers who he perceives as low class make. See the electrician thread.

OP, go fuck yourself, snob.
