Most of them are pretty low. Assuming it was an $8 per hour state, I'd still tip, but it would be for going above and beyond, as opposed to an obligation for any service that's merely acceptable.

I'd tip if I thought the service was good. I wouldn't feel that I had to hold to the standard percentage if I didn't want to.

My state doesn't but if it did I would still tip. I would be stricter with the qualifications for a good tip but would still tip. Treat me well and you get tipped well.

Somebody needs to do a search to see how many threads JEDI has started that attempt to justify his/her (lack of) tipping habits.

People who think tips are expected are usually people who work or worked in the service industry - at least that's from my own experience.

Tipping should NOT be expected - it should be EARNED.

Do we tip employees at fast food restaurants who earn minimum wage? Nope. They technically perform the same job - take your order and serve your food.

This is not to say I don't tip - but the amount of the tip will be determined by the service. I've left a place with a .01 tip because they waiter was goofing off and didn't seem to give a rats ass about getting our order correctly. I've also tipped 20% at other places where the service and food was top notch - those places I'm a repeat customer and they treat me like I'm the king of the world when I walk into the place.

As for the Douchebag comment - I guess everyone in China is a Douchebag then? They have better service than most places in America and do not want or expect to be tipped. Some will run after you and give the tip back if you try to leave it on the table. It's expected they provide you with good service and they know it.

I tip, unless the service is 100% shitty. Otherwise I just double the tax.

Minimum wage for most servers is 90 volts. Less than that they usually don't show up.

Do you live in China? Then leave a fucking tip.

Most people who don't tip have never worked in the service industry.

Does anyone know how we became a tipping society to begin with? I know in Japan I had a girl chase me down to give back the money I left on the table for her.

It began with the concept of 'largesse' with traveling Nobles and well to do in a time when servers weren't paid at all.

Yep. California is a "full minimum wage" state and I still tip at the same percentage that I do in the "sub-minimum wage" states.

It's been my experience that food prices are very competitive between the two kinds of states, (using chain restaurants as an example) and real estate costs would make up more of any increase than the difference in wages.

this thread is moot since all servers are required to at least make min. wage.

That said most servers in this country are not in it for just making that.

I tip well when I have good service. 15% when it's just ok. that's the way the model works.

The difference is in how the server is paid the minimum wage. MOST states allow the employer to pay the server a "sub-minimum" wage of $2.13/hour and let the employee's tips make up the difference, however, many states require the employer to pay the server the full minimum wage and the tips are over and above that...allows servers to actually make a decent living.

I normally tip well at around 20 - 25%. If the server sucks then I give a much smaller tip.
