Tipping at extended stay hotels...

I'm going to be at a Residence Inn for three months. The maids are scheduled for every day, but I think I'm only going to have them clean MWF. How much should I tip? $1 each of the three days? $5 on Friday? More?
 
I dunno maybe I'm not supposed to. I figured dropping a couple bucks would stop the maid from stealing stuff, and I remember my parents tipping when we stayed at a place in Europe for about a week.

For me? Nothing. 😀 Company is paying all of it. Rate on the door is $199 (per day), I think for real people it's about $125, and my company is paying $55.

the "rack rate" listed on hotel room doors is generally 2 to 4 times what the usual rates are. For example, if the rack rate is $300 a day, the room will usually go for about $100-$175.

Oh and where should I leave the tip? I have no clue on this. I don't want the maid to think it was just money I forgot to put away.
 
I would leave the same tip each day you wish to have your room cleaned as you may have different housekeepers on different days, but $2~3 left on your pillow should be fine if your room is cleaned several times a week.

 
They usually have an envelope on one of the dressers or tables for it.

Edit: It'll have some sort of little message on it about it being for the housekeeping staff.

It was my understanding that wait staff made less than minimum wage, which is why I do in fact tip at restaurants.
 
Tipping maids is crap.

Well ok let me explain. If you always need extra towels, leave lots of crap all over to be picked up and cleaned, have kids and need lots of extra stuff.... then yes you should tip for making the maids go above and beyond. But for a clean organized single guy like me who never asks for anything more. Thats crap. Whoever started this tipping maids as an obligation now needs to die. Why do they deserve any extra money over the girl at the super market or the janitor or the front desk guy? They are getting paid already.

(and yes I always tip good for food.... although I think they should abolish that too and just charge a bit more for food).

Depends on what state you're in. In California, they have to make minimum wage (or more).
