Tip barber if he owns the shop?

I always do, the place I go is an older Italian guy that started a place on his own.

I think he's retired and has lived locally and knows a lot of good stories about local things from long ago, and he doesn't charge a lot to begin with.

I tip him about 30%

Looks like almost everyone is in favor of tipping the barber. I have no problem with doing that. Just wanted to know if that was the acceptable thing to do.

I actually tried going today. There were 4 other people waiting when I got there, so I decided to do some shopping then come back later in the afternoon. When I came back he was closed for the day 🙁

There is no "necessary" about tipping. "Customary" would be the word.

Technically, for maybe services it's expected so a necessity.

People have changed tipping especially on food service to become this thing that is only done if it goes above and beyond.

It's why so many places are making service/gratuity part of the bill.

I went to the barber shop with a guy and his wife as owners/barbers and they charge about $10 per hair cut. I always gave $1 or $2 each time I went there.

If you're a good tipper, it's amazing the difference it can sometimes make at places you frequent.

I haven't tipped my barber in over 25 years. Well, figuratively speaking, I give her more than just a tip. 😛 Wife's been cutting my hair since we've been married. So, over 25 years, I've probably saved about $4k.

For years, I've been going to one of those chain hair salons and have always tipped the stylist.

But I'm thinking about trying the barber that my dad has been going to. It's a one man operation.

My dad says you don't need to tip the barber since he owns the shop. This doesn't seem right to me. What's ATOT's opinion?

no, u should never tip the owner.

I goto super cuts. its a franchise. when I get the owner to cut my hair, I don't tip him.
he seems fine w/that. my haircuts have been great always.

That's hard to believe, from the opinions above. If you believe them, then you should expect the guy to purposely give you a bad haircut the next time you come in. 🙄
