Tiny Terrier Dies After Saving 5 Kids

Tiny Terrier Dies After Saving 5 Kids

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A plucky foot-high Jack Russell terrier named George saved five New Zealand children from two marauding pitbulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight he had to be destroyed, his owner said Wednesday.

George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pitbulls appeared and lunged toward them, his owner Allan Gay said.

"George was brave _ he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.

"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."

One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pitbulls to keep them off his four-year-old brother, Darryl.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him _ one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

But George, aged 9, was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.

"The two pitbulls ripped the skin from his throat and chest and down his back," he said, adding the tough little terrier also "had a bad heart condition."

Gay said the pitbulls' owner had surrendered the pair to dog control officers, and demanded they be destroyed, claiming they had launched unprovoked attacks previously.

South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two dogs had been impounded, and likely would be destroyed because of the attack.

In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.

Yet another evidence that pit-bulls are too dangerous to be in public.. I've heard many horrific pit-bull attack stories. Luckily terrier saved the kids from potentially death or disfigurement..

That's one tough little ah heck. He's lived a happy 9yrs and has stood up in the name of fear. I don't know if I could do the same given the same situation, honestly speaking.

RIP little one 🙁

I'm looking for a dog to accompany me on my new property. That little T had some realy spirit-I do belive that their is 'spirit' in dogs as well as people.

I've never saved children from pitbulls-though I've protected kittens from my black lab (when I was 7).

Obviously, those pit bulls were nobody's friend, much less mans.

Poor little Jack. 🙁

Pit Bulls aren't dogs. They're vicious heartless, cold-blooded killers. Dogs are compassionate animals who love their owners.

The pit bulls were dogs like any other dog. A dog is a dog is a dog.

Cats > Dogs

Poor little terrier 🙁 I wonder if he managed to rough up the pit bulls at all.

Cats are worthless. If a cat were involved in the same situation, it's probably fluff up its tail, run under the house then lick itself leaving the kids to fend for themselves.

George had to be "destroyed"?

Sad, terriers are cool, as is any other dog.

I will admit I cry sometimes that my 14 year old dog is close to death. Ive grown up with her and I just cant stand it 🙁

Shes started losing a lot of hair, and my parents say they will put her down at the end of summer.

That's called a "Strategic Retreat" to draw them off while the kids seek backup 😛

..backyard breeders have ruined the breed. They have selectively breed the most aggresive resulting in the equivalent of a land shark.. that goes into a violently agitated state at which point the owner looses complete control and many times ends up a victim of attack when he tries to stop the frenzied dog. Present day pitbulls are a huge litigation hazard to the point many homeowner insurers will not renew if they become aware of a high risk dog. Many localities are now banning pitbulls because of the huge litigation hazard and municipal culpability and risk to the tax payer. Many lawyers eagerly persue pitbull owners because the onus of responsibility and case history of court ordered awards in pitbull violence cases. So if you or your pet is attacked by a pitbull you'll have no trouble finding a lawyer to take the case.
