Tiny little music rant (sorta)

Dragonforce...

Ok. I like hard rock as much as the next guy, but to me, I just don't see why it seemed that half the the net was jumping up and down about that band a few months ago as if they were the best thing to happen to rock. Now I will say that their music is fun to listen to and I like the singer, but I think people belive the music is soooo good because of how complex it is and at the speed of which it is played. Playing like that does take A LOT of skill (more than I could ever DREAM of having) but I have to ask one thing about all that fancy guitar work...

Does it speak to you?

At the risk of sounding like a hippie that should be on meds, let me explain. I've always felt that a guitar should have have some connection that branches from the musician, to the instrument, to who ever happens to take the time to listen. The guitar is one of the few instruments that, when played by the right person, needs nothing more to complete it and can tell a story without words. Pretty much (sounding like a MAJOR pot head) you should FEEL the music played by a guitar.

Just a small example.

Music is all about personal tastes, if you like Dragonforce that is fine if that's what you like. All I'm trying to say about them is while fancy finger work IS impressive, I would hate to see it become the new standard for guitar music.

Ok, got that out of my system. Night all.

I like Dragonforce. It speaks to me as much as any music does, which is to say, not at all. It's just music, dude. Get over it.

Absolutely. Indeed, the Dragonforce tune sounds like something a computer would spit out via MIDI format. Fuck that song. It is not music.

Dragonforce is part of the genre 'power metal' and I personally thing their singer blows giant dick. Is Herman Li good? Yes. Is he going to be remembered down the road? Maybe, but not like other great guitarists. They're a fad that caught on because of guitar hero. They had 3 CDs before they even made it to the game, and nobody gave a fuck before then so it's pretty obvious they wouldn't be anywhere without the help of the game. Li is fast as hell, but after a few tracks you can tell he just goes 110% all the time with no melody or key so it gets boring. Fun to hear occasionally on the radio or even play on the game, but definitely not something I would listen to given my own choice.

I'm pretty sure this is why I hate them so much, kids that took Guitar Hero WAY too seriously.

What's that? You got a perfect score on the song and posted it on YouTube so everyone can see how cool you are? That's GREAT news! Now go away.

Play the game with friends for laid back fun and you're fine. Play it like you?re hot **** and you?re just being a douche.

Never heard of them.

But you're right about one thing, music is all about personal tastes. I don't know about all the other stuff...

I actually listen to a ton of power metal. Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, Helloween--All sweet bands. Dragonforce is pretty good, and they're known for their fast style within the metal world.

Yea, they probably have a lot of bandwagon fans that like them because of GH, but whatever, they'll pass. Dragonforce will always have a core group of fans that listen to them, and their current popularity is probably much more then they ever could have expected. If you listen to power metal, you know that its never really going to be mainstream. People who think Dragonforce style metal is the next big thing have no idea what their talking about.

fuck them. and fuck the song. I'm not good at Guitar Hero and that song of theirs makes me shat in anger. I watched the video which I had never seen before, and I don't get it. If that song isn't from 1985 something's wrong. I was confused to see an asian dude with long hair shredding. Which one of the 2 guitarists is supposed to be the uber one?
