Tinted windows on a car...whats legal?

Depends on the state whose license plates the car bears. US Government plates (Available to most(all?) federal employees) allow full tint all around. All states allow the top eighth or so of the windshield to be heavily tinted as a "sun visor".

in ca. you can have the rear windows tinted...not the driver and passenger window and not the windshield but everyone here gets the driver and passenger windows tinted anyways.

Tinting laws never stopped people from tinting their windows to their likings.

I think in California it's 35% tinting for the front windows and any for the back windows.
I'm not quite sure but there are websites out there.

you're WRONG, california is NO TINT on front windows, back windows is anything.

The laws vary from state to state as people have said. The one thing you can't tint anywhere IIRC is the front windshield (aside from the top strip). In my state, the driver, passenger, and back windows are 35% max. Other windows can be tinted as dark as you want.

When I'm going to get my windows tinted I'm just going to drive over to NV and get them done. I didn't know CA was *none* on the front windows... It would look very stupid with the back windows tinted with anything significant if the front have nothing.

I said I THINK and did you notice I said I'M not QUITE sure?

Don't get so EXCITED. I read somewhere that SAID 35% but like I said I WASN'T SURE. :disgust:

You can get your driver's and passenger windows tinted to anything you want in CA. There is no law prohibiting companies from doing so. You are the one who will get the ticket and have to remove the tint. The company MAY have to get a release from you in writing stating that they have informed you of the law, though. Not sure.

LOL

i have tint on my van windows, the rear doors, and side door,
{not the drivers/passenger Front side doors}. That is Mirror tint, which is illegal to use on car windows.

The Trooper who told me this,at work, said it reflects the headlights at night, but, because my van is so much higher than cars it is ok.
He also said that if you want less hassles, about tinted windows,do Not do the 2 front side windows.
{the drivers,and front pass. windows}

That way if the Police do pull you over, they can see thru your side mirrors, and feel less threatened.

Police officers don't like tinted windows because it is difficult for them to see in your car. That, and night vision concerns, are the main reasons there are laws.

Just do a 50% all around, with the windshield down to the AS1 line, and if you're EVER pulled over for ANY reason, power-roll down all the windows before they come up to the car, sit tight and don't sweat it (and ALWAYS have your license and insurance card in your wallet, and DON'T ever talk back like a punk). This will put them at ease (because of your demeanor, and because they can see inside easily) so they can just give you your speeding ticket, warning, or whatever, let you go, and forget all about you by the end of the shift.

This will give you the best chance of them not making the tint an issue. Reasonable police officers (and surprising to some, that's actually MOST of them that I've ever dealt with or talked to) will usually take a reasonable common sense approach to law enforcement, if you don't do anything to make them nervous or pissed off.

so 35% tint is lighter than 20% tint?

No, 35% tint blocks 35% of the light, and 20% tint blocks 20% if the light.

No, you have that backwards. 35% tint ALLOWS 35% of the light through, etc.

35% tint is lighter than 20% tint. You really don't want 20% tint on the side windows, or your rear window, unless you're very good at backing up using your mirrors, because it makes it very difficult to see at night. 35% is bad enough at night. I can't even imagine how badly 20% would cripple my night vision. It just would not be safe, IMO.

I don't know about that chart. I thought ANY tinting in NY was illegal (not that people care and refrain from it here). I've been wanting to do the reflective silver tint on my car for years...

I believe it's 33% here in Oregon.
Oregon and Washington state both allow up to 35% on all windows on cars (except only a 6" strip is allowed on the top of the windshield). MPV's (SUV's, trucks, vans, wagons) are also allowed unlimited tint (up to fully blacked-out) on windows behind the driver's head as long as the vehicle has both side mirrors.

edit: and you MUST carry the tint certificate (receipt package the tint installer gave you) in the car at all times
so 35% tint is lighter than 20% tint?
YES.

Maybe I'm reading that chart wrong, but I thought it said 70% on the front windows and anything on the rears.
