Have you tried moving the unit to another location. If the problem is environmental like I think moving the unit should fix / change the problem. How about simply rotating the unit 90 degrees, does the gray patches move/go away/ change?

Yes! anything magnetic, even another monitor can casue this type of problem.

Going to try moving one to another location and see if that fixes it.
 
Environment issues aside(sounds certainly possible), have you checked your manual for various settings. I know my Mitsubishi has Corner Purity adjustments amongst other things which I needed to adjust when I first setup the monitor.
