Tinted corners on Sony monitors

I have had 3 "new" monitors from Sony, all have the same problem.

The left side of the screen is tinted grey, the left, tinted blue. This has happened on 3 different video cards, so I doubt its that. Is this normal for Sony monitors? If so, thats pretty poor quality, and I can't see how people recommend them.

<< hmm.... I have the Sony Trinitron 19" multiscan G420 and I love it!! No problems at all!!! 😱 >>

Mines Dell but same result!

Odds are this is not a function of the brand in this case Sony. It is more likely a function of using an Aperture grille monitor in a location that has magnetic influence on the monitor.

Because monitors use electromagnetism to control their electron guns, magnetic fields build up within the monitor and cause distortions that appear as colored patches on the screen.

It sounds like a color purity issue, these are typically caused by some sort of magnetic interference. In fact the earth?s magnetic field can cause this problem. Try rotating the monitor 90 degrees. I would expect you to see a color shift in the corners or around the edges. Now, degauss the monitor, or turn it off for a couple minutes then turn it back on. If the colors in the corner are better, it is the location of the monitor that is the problem.

Many monitors have purity controls, check your user guide. Play with the purity controls, these may also help.

Degaussing the unit will almost always eliminate the problems with color purity. A local TV repair shop should be able to do this. It is best if it is done in the location the monitor will be used. Thus you may need to pay for a service call.

Well it sounds like you're having delivery problems. FedEx and UPS both screw up on shipping monitors. Anyway, try to mess around with the settings.

I've owned a few Sony monitors, more recently, a Sony E200--absolutely perfect picture...beautiful. My current G520 is also very nice to look at. I'm not sure where Orcish got his information but it seems wrong to me.

We've got over 150 Sony monitors at our office. No problems at all. Orcish is full of crap, he posts this wild-ass stuff every time someone has a problem with a Sony monitor. Wild stories with no substance or truth.

Gosharkss knows what he is talking about with monitors. I also suspect some type of external electromagnetic interference, not a problem with Sony.

The "tint" is due to you not setting up the monitor convergence controls correctly. You know you ACTUALLY have to calibrate a monitor when you get.

Not all monitors need calibration, most work perfectly out of the box. Also this does not sound like a convergence problem, it sounds more like a purity problem.

<< I don't understand how anyone could recommend you a Sony monitor >>

Wtf are you talking about? Everyone who i have talked to about monitors say that Sony makes the best hands down.
I loved my Sony 15in Triniton and my mom's 17incher.

I dont like sony monitors, got a 19" trinitron a few years ago, it had a green ghost on the right of everyting. Took forever to get fixed too. 🙁

"The "tint" is due to you not setting up the monitor convergence controls correctly. You know you ACTUALLY have to calibrate a monitor when you get. "

Thats news to me. I messed with the convergence controls, and all those seemed to do was make it blurry or in focus, nothing more.

I have a G200 and it shows no problems. I had old speakers that causes some shifting, even when they were shielded. Sonys do have a pretty high rate of failure, but who says other monitors don't? Just becuase your or a handful of there say so doesn't mean the thousands or even millions will die. Most people who don't have a Sony probably don't have the money to afford one and therefore conviced themselves that they are inferior. Some may even have a Sony in the first place as their tubes are used A LOT. They beat viewsonics and samsungs outright. I got one of those cheap envisions and they have real awesome color though, almost twice as rich as sonys, but its so rich it bleads.

If your not satisfied, get a replacement. Sony seems to have funny batches all over the place. They are not big on costomumer support, they just know how to make real neat stuff. I had to go to almost 3 color clies to get one that satisfied me. I had to switch the screen and stuff after. Also their Viaos are crap, i have to fix a lot of them and they are pretty crappy to fix.

I usually stay away from sony stuff, but there are a few departments that they really stand out in and that monitors, pdas, and can't really think of anything else.

BTW isn't there some gun you can get to daguass things?

Yes

Find the Nokia test pattern software, do a google search its around some where.

Or create a grid pattern, white lines on a black background, 1" squares work great.

Looking at the white lines and look for areas on the lines where you see a colored shadow (red, green or blue) on the line. This is an indication of a convergence problem. Similar to a color mis-registration in a newspaper photo.

Now create a full white screen. Look for discoloration or grayish patches, this is an indication of a purity problem or brightness uniformity problem. Some CRT's can vary up to 30% in brightness from the center to the corners. If you have one of these you will see it.

I'm not defending Sony here, even though we sell Sony products I still see them as a competitor. However I don't think it is good to bash a brand in this case. The original poster has what I think is an environmental issue, not a brand or a shipping issue.

It is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer that Eizo F980 is the best there is and the rest are varying grades of crud.

<< Who exactly have U talked to? I've talked to people professionally involved into repairing electronics. And they told me that the majority of monitors they ever have to repair are Sonies. They also told me that yes, uneducated people buy Sony b/c they like it's design, but it has nothing to do with the technical level of their products which is the lowest among nearly all the Japanese companies. You may like Sony monitors, and it's fine, but lots of those who really understand a lot in monitors don't. >>

Sounds like those "professionals" you have been talking to should have their credentials stripped. They might need their vision checked too, 'cause apparently they're not getting a very good look at image quality, not to mention the specs (or what you refer to as the "technical level" of their products).

Loved the "uneducated people" quip thrown in for good measure. That's an easy one to dispell though ... "uneducated people" couldn't afford to buy a Sony in the first place. 😀

<< I would think so too, except I just replaced an older monitor with no problems, with a Sony, and it popped up. >>

What was your old monitor? 15" maybe 17". For that matter what Sony models have you tried? Larger monitors are more susceptible to the magnetic interference issues that can cause purity problems. Its very likely you would never notice it on a small monitor.

Old monitor was a 200GS (Sony) and it didn't have the problem.

New ones are: Returned G400, another G400, and a recently (1 weeK) bought 220R

Heres one more question, since the deguass and other stuff didn't work...Can having 2 monitors side by side also cause this?

<< hmm.... I have the Sony Trinitron 19" multiscan G420 and I love it!! No problems at all!!! 😱 >>

same here. Never had a problem with Sony...
