OK, how many here have this condition ? I've had it for years .. some hearing loss as a result. Back in the day to much loud music and while in the Army I didn't use my ear plugs while in my track vehicles ( M113 ) and around M60 tanks at the motor pool.

As long as I'm around some noise I don't hear it. But at night ( year round ) I have to have a fan on to cancel out the ringing. If you have this condition how do you cope ?

This thread reminded me of this interview on Fresh Air. Normally I don't really like the show because the guests are musicians etc that I don't really care about, but this interview was good.

Fast forward to around the 6 minute mark to hear a gun fired in two different environments and the vastly different noises (or lack thereof) that are heard.

I have it...not terrible though. My hearing is still good, just took a hearing test a few days ago.

Could file a VA claim if it's service connected. You will get 10% if they find in your favor

Big time. Probably more the result of not using hearing protection with power tools. Also, I had a job for a summer in a plastics production facility where I operated a sonic welder that I suspect did some damage.

It's very loud, but it usually doesn't bother me. I've lived with it for at least 15 or 20 years. I probably also have some other hearing loss, as well. I have some trouble hearing voices in noisy environments, which I can tell is more than other (read: younger) people experience.

You might want to do some research into notched music therapy for tinnitus. I've played around with it a little, but haven't put the time and effort into it yet to see if really helps. The way I produce the notched music is by using SoX software to alter music playing through a Logitech Squeezebox and my stereo system. You need to know the frequency of the ringing, though, to make it effective, and I haven't seen an audiologist.

I have it pretty bad from too many loud concerts.

Doesn't really bother me though.

I have it bad, right now its slightly louder than the fans on my open PC sitting on my desk, but I don't use anything for sleep, just think about the number of people every year driven insane from it, and decide not to be bothered by it.

i've had it all my life, although it was much worse when i was a kid. fortunately, my hearing is still good despite that, an ear infection, and loud music.

I've had it for years now, and to some extent it has gotten worse as time passes. I'm able to ignore it, though, and for the most part it doesn't bother me.

I've had it since a Genesis concert in the 80's blew my hearing that night. I've noticed that when I'm tired before going to bed it gets worse. No cure for it, you adjust.

I play the drums and was rehearsing with my band when a feedback problem through a guitar amp near me damaged my hearing. I lost the ability to hear a certain frequency in the higher range in my left ear. Also can hear a kind of roar occasionally.

I don't recall if it was actually tinnitus but the doctor said that many people with this problem noted a decrease over time, and they don't really know if it actually heals or you just get so used to it you barely notice anymore. In my case it seemed to go away other than the occasional ringing for a short time.

I bought a custom fit set of musician's earplugs, which cut out the highs but enable you to hear somewhat - good enough to play music. They're great for concerts as well.

Depending on the actual damage, there are things you can do to reverse tinnitus. My first recommendation is silica taken on an empty stomach every morning. It also works great for vertigo.

I have just developed it. Had an infection in my ear I think. Kinda sucks but what are you going to do? I have always slept with a fan on and the rest of the time I have the radio or the TV on. So far not so bad.

Not to be a turd, but I have never understood why people post something like this in this type of thread. I mean the people who read/reply are going to have tinnitus so why say "Oh thank God I don't have that" I mean that is like going up to someone in a wheel chair and saying, "I don't know how you can handle not walking. It must suck."

I was just chatting with a co-worker about this. Supposedly he only hears it when he goes to sleep. He has been using a "white noise maker" which is some sort of small fan? Seems to work great for him.

I had it (or something like it) for 6 months or so in my right ear. No idea why it started, but eventually it either went away or my brain just filters the noise out now. I have been left with a little hearing loss in that ear though, particularly the higher frequencies.

Temporary hearing loss is much more apparent than permanent. I don't hear ringing like that 24/7, and I can't even hear it unless I wear ear plugs. Even the slightest breeze makes more noise.

I have it from using headphones too much with loud music. It sucks. Makes me cringe every time I walk past someone with earbuds in, and I can hear their music. If I can hear it, they have it much too loud.

Just take a tinnitus shot once about every 10 years. :ninja:

It will happen eventually, a shot for everything. And most of ATOT will be advocates for them. I will still be considered in the minority for trying to fix basic nutritional deficiencies of the modern processed food diet.

Not that tinnitus comes from a deficiency, however you can better protect yourself from the effects of loud noise, either: internally through supplementation or externally with earplugs that linearly attenuate sound. Call me crazy, just don't call me Shirley or late for dinner.

I have it - not too severely. A few years ago it got quite noticeable. I'd been taking a lot of aspirin for migraines and my doctor said it was one of the triggers for tinnitus. Stopped the aspirin and it calmed down to a level I can ignore (unless I read something like this and start paying attention to it again).

I have it pretty bad. Probably from headphones, car stereo, guns, fireworks, etc as a kid.
Right ear is higher frequency, left ear is lower frequency.
There are days it is very noticeable. Caffeine and stress make it worse.
I also have moderate hearing loss in my right ear.

I recently got an $300 exSilent hearing aid. It worked decently, but it amplified everything, so it was annoying. It also played with my head. Most people have dominant ears (just like eyes). Since my left is better than my right, it is dominant.
When I used the hearing aid in my right ear, it became dominant and it seemed like my left ear didn't work very well. I ended up returning it because I wasn't using it much and I figured I would go get a professional tuned aid some day when it affects me more.

It really sucks that everyone has eye insurance and glassed are like $100 and last forever.
Hearing aids usually aren't covered and if they are, it is like 50%.
They wear out easily, cost thousands of dollars and constantly need tweaked.

I've got it.

Don't know if its related to my experience or not. In dog school, we did have a Drill Sergeant that just walked around and randomly fired his M-14. Neither my dog nor I cared for that... Though, we were never exposed to mechanical noise the way that you were.

Its not a big deal. Doc tells me there is nothing that they can do about it. Only bothers me when it is quiet and I am trying to hear something. Don't have it all the time, it comes and goes.

Doc also tells me that there is nothing that they can do about the skin rash I get either. Don't have it all the time, it comes and goes. The puppy, and I, walked a perimeter in the jungle that had a 10 meter dead area, where nothing ever grew, on the outside...
