Tinfoil hats at the ready... Man paralyzed from Flu Shot

CBC story

I'm not sure how you Americans handle the flu shot, if you do at all, but this is a regular free shot up here, which I typically have always had. This isn't going to change that, but it's pretty scary when you consider how screwed up this guy is because of the shot.

My fellow Canucks, do you get the flu shot?

Not until we've had the requisite number of "omg the FDA and drug companies are teh evilz!!!" replies.

The neurologist diagnosed Ryan with Guillain-Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disease that attacks the nervous system.

According to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, the chance of developing that particular disease from a flu shot is one in a million.

This is the extent of the detail the article gives into specifics of how the condition was linked to the flu vaccine or the physiological causes of it. The rest of it is fear-mongering.

That's some real crack reporting there...

The comments under the article make me want to increase the murder rate in Canada to well over 600.

Millions have received the flu shot in the US yet, I've never heard of anyone becoming paralyzed.

people in colder climate have weaker immune system. Maybe he was given an US strength one.

That wouldn't apply in this case since New Westminister, BC is in a mild climate where Alaska, North Dakota, Maine, etc are in much colder climates.

stop being logical. It doesn't fit ATOT 🙂

I don't need the flu shot and will never get one.

Just got mine today actually. Arm is a little sore, but that's about it.

The odds on this happening are very small, but it's still scary. Yeah, it's just one in a million, but what if you happen to be that unlucky one?

Same logic applies to being struck by lightning and most people don't worry about that too much.

I don't plan on ever getting a flu shot after finding out that they use mercury in the solution. No thank you.
We played that lotto with the MMR jab with our older child and won (lost). I know 1st hand how mercury can fuck someone up.

fail!

How much thimerosal-free influenza vaccine is expected to be available for the 2008-09 season?

For the 2008-09 season, manufacturers project producing as many as 50 million doses of thimerosal-free or preservative-free (trace thimerosal) influenza vaccine. Of these 50 million doses, approximately 20 million doses represent flu vaccine products that are licensed for use in children over 3 years of age.

Next conspiracy theory please.
