On a related note, I'm currently watching a presentation on domestic surveillance given by former NSA cryptographer Bill Binney. All these posts are probably being squirreled away by the government to use against you at a future date. Why AGAINST you? Because that's how the game's played. Anything, can and will be used against you in a court of law. Things that defend your position conveniently get omitted. That's why we have so many fraudulent convictions in this country, with innocent people sitting in jail, when even a dumb ass can see the gaping holes in the cases against them :^S

Almost as bad as a week or so back when we had 8 topics with Apple in the title on the first page.

Don't worry, there's a traffic ticket thread now for you to read - nothing to see here.

Someone has been actively profiling the ATOT members over the years. :hmm:
Of course most of the poll answers have been lies.

Yeah, whatever. Anything said on a public forum is public. I have no issue with the government profiling my public behavior; and it goes both ways. We can record cops at traffic stops, and they can record us walking into Starbucks.

You should have a problem with it, and in any case, forum posts are the easy gimme. They're also collecting your email, searches, and everything else they can suck up online.

Are they really? http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...important-step-towards-protecting-your-inbox/

Public is public. Your privacy by definition is not protected in public. I'd have an issue with them reading emails without a warrant, but for the moment that seems to be being addressed.

First off, that's not law. It hasn't been watered down by police staters yet. Second, that doesn't prevent them from keeping your mail, or anything else they choose to keep, and then unlocking it once they've trumped up some kind of reason for doing so. If it isn't appropriate for your neighbor to have all your data, then it isn't appropriate for the government to have it. I'm not sure why this is even a discussion.

They keep your searches, but I don't know about it being on your system. I don't have anything like that in Debian. I don't use webmail though. Everything goes through a client. Maybe browser history?

He said he's got firefox set to clear all history/cookies when he closes. Wouldn't doubt that there's something in the gmail fine print that says they'll collect it.

I'm not saying it is. I'm saying you're blowing it out of proportion.

Given that the "police staters" already tried to negate warrants entirely (see Leahy's original amendment at their behest) and got blatantly smacked down, I wouldn't be so sure. And assuming it passes into law, how will the government keep something they can't access? We'll see.

As for trumped up charges, yes, because that is a completely new concept that has never been seen or dealt with in this nation's history. That's an issue completely separate from the topic at hand. You can trump up charges for anything, and our legal system has mechanisms to fight such charges. Yes, the government breaks its own laws from time to time. Welcome to reality for the last few millenniums.

The government already has my driver's license info, social security number, background check and fingerprints from my old internship, passport info, and so on. They have more than enough information already, by my consent with my signature, because I got something in return. If they really wanted to profile me they could quite legally have a team of agents following me around in public recording my every public meal. How do you think private investigators work? They go off public information.

Now government intrusion into private information is another matter, but most of what you're talking about is public. Yes, it is appropriate for any entity to have any and all publicly obtainable information about you. That's the definition of "public". The modern issue is people's misconception of digital public places as private places.

ZOMG the government can trace my web searches and forums posts? And they can save them forever? Well no shit, they could also videotape/record me talking to my friends on a street corner.

First off, the comment about forum posts was a segue to post a video I found interesting. I also think it's good for people to realize that what they say in public can be compiled and aggregated. We KNOW the government's doing it, but I could be doing it also, and so could anyone else. People sometimes forget they aren't truly anonymous here, and sometimes it's a good idea to STFU, because what you say can be used against you.

I wanted to post the video because I'm into privacy, and government abuses. When a NSA cryptographer that served his country with honor comes out and says the country he served is turning into a dictatorship, I take notice. What I'm saying is I posted this because I think people need to see it. I harp on libre software, and privacy because people don't seem to care. People need to start caring, because once your rights are gone, they're that much harder to get back.

IOW, I used this thread as a convenient platform to soapbox for a bit. I already feel like I do it too much, so I don't like creating too many threads on the same subject. If I can get one person to notice, and take their rights and privacy seriously, it'll all be worth while; especially if they in turn get someone else to notice. Good ideas sometimes start slowly, but that's how good change happens. Bad change happens by doing nothing, and letting people who don't have your best interests at heart get their way.

Well, they have all your mail anyway. They also read it all. It's not a human reading it, but they still read it. Everything you do with Google services is collected, cross-referenced, and a profile is made about you. Searches, mail contents, YouTube watches... everything.

Here's a couple interesting infographics from DuckDuckGo that explain why it matters...

lks, looks like that decepticon robot critter.

A lot of crap there isn't it? I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it gives a rough idea. I have 3rd party cookies blocked, and facebook cookies blocked completely, but I still see facebook show up. I need to spend some time and manually go through my cookie list to see what's there. Maybe some stuff is slipping through my Adblock list through creative naming :^/
