You can do it yourself if you have the tools. Either way, if you were to get it professionally done, the $250-$500 is well worth it.

I've seen my father do it and it's a pain in the ass (V6 DOHC). But I'd imagine with a 4 cyl single over head cam (one less pully to wrap the belt around) and the right tools it would be eaiser. Just not many of us have the right tools or know how and time to do it. I have no where to jack up my car and im not about to remove radiator hoses, drive belts, A/c parts, engine mounts, and replace the water pump. That's a job worth paying 4-5 dollars for and keeping the skin on my knuckles intact.

I also remember Exxon screwing up my friends timing belt because they just randomly wrapped the belt around the pullys. Moral of the story, don't go to a gas station for engine service.

Since I started this thread I should let you know that today I put my 2000 Accord into the Honda dealer shop. $499 gets me a new timing belt, water pump, the belts that cover the ac-power steering and alternator, valve cover gasket, new coolant and a car wash. So I caved in at 7 years 5 months and 82,000 miles. I think $499 is a fair price and now I wont have to worry about my interference valves slapping my pistons and killing the motor.

new plugs
new tensioner
new idler bearing
new water pump
new air filter
new fuel filter
new PCV valve
new plug wires

6.5 hours ($390) labor at a small shop.

Depends on the car, of course, but it can indeed be a real pain. It's not too hard to get at on my car...pretty much just remove the motor mount on that side, take off the covers, and very carefully remove the old one and put the new one on...but considering that you have virtually NO space to work with, the waterpump adds to the complexity if you're changing that as well, and you can't see the indexing marks with the engine in the car, I did it while I had the engine out and was changing my clutch. Now THAT was a piece of cake.

My Audi dealer wanted $1,500 for less work than that. :)

Nice car, but I'm not going miss getting it serviced at the dealer!

9 years and 166,000 miles. Finally did it two days ago. Honda Accord, 2001 with four cylinders.
