Timing belt changes

The time is about to come for my mom's Accord..and right now I'm looking for some oem parts online to see if I can make it cheaper..we'll probably get the water pump changed to.

So how much did you guys pay for yours, did you get anything else changed then too, and how many miles before you did?

Got my water pump and my timing belt along with a WHOLE bunch of other stuff fixed in my Tundra.. cost was about $1300. :Q

Make sure that no matter who does the work, they use a Honda belt, water pump, and tensioner (if recommended). Don't take risks with second rate parts when a failure can result in catastrophe for the engine.

Just wondering why are you changing the timing belt & water pump at the same time? Is this standard procedure? I had my civic's timing belt changed 3 years ago....... cost me $300.

An honest independent shop should charge you around $300 if it's a 4 cyl. for the entire job and using oem parts. We strongly not recommend aftermarket parts, the water pump in particular.

Go check your owner's manual, it usually recommends that water pump and timing belt to be changed at the same recommended service interval. I have a 96' civic. recommend service interval for timing belt and water pump is at the initial 90k mi and every 60k after that. Also, say if you have a leaky water pump and it needs to be replaced. It makes sense to get the timing belt replaced as well since you have to remove the timing belt anyway before getting to the water pump. It saves you on the labor cost.

Cool.......... thanks for the info.......... gonna replace the timing belt again in another 30K KM :D I've had bad luck with my 90' civic Si this year.......... rusted out muffler............. replace both CV boots (cracked and having the clunk clunk click click noise)......... also a leak in the oil pan. I supposes it's to be expected from a 12 year old car :)

My charge for labor on a timing belt and water pump replacement is $180 plus parts.
Whenever the timing belt is replaced,the water pump should be replaced as well.

Most cars have the pump in a place where you'd need to take off the belt to get to it anyway... just makes practical sense to replace it while you are changing the belt..

I'm sorry I didn't mean to hijack this thread but ROGER! I have a question for you.... I have a 96 Sentra and when I press the accelerator, my brake and battery light comes on...and my dashboard lights dims also. Does that sound like a problem with the alternator? Would it best to get the dealer to replace it? I know diddly about cars. I just had a fuse box replaced for a no-start problem and the mechanic wanted to replace the alternator for 425...i dont have the money to do the job yet.

Among other things, I replaced the belt, pump and tensioner when I rebuilt the heads and replaced rings & bearings on my 92 Accord. Total cost of parts should be reasonable at Majestic.

My alternator is being replaced today. They are using a bosche alternator for $180 and charging about 1 hour labor in a 93 sentra. I've heard conflicting reports on how hard it is in this vehicle, but when it really came down to it I don't have time to take off today to try and figure it out and last night I had no lighted garage so I basically had no other choice. I bet that is your alternator, but I wonder what roger said ;)

Here is a question: How much to change a timing chain? Is it just as difficult or more so than the belt? Let's say a chain needs replacement and a waterpump at same time; how many hours would that take? I imagine the chain and pump are pretty cheap.

It is a lot more difficult and can become very expensive.
Why ?
Chains tend to last the life of the vehicle,therefor they are not mass produced in large quantities like timing belts.Also because you should replace all the tensioners and guides and sprockets when you replace a chain.
On top of that,chains are sealed behind a timing chain cover which is a lot more labor intensive to R & R than a plastic timing belt cover.

This applies to 4 and 6 cylinder engines,not to V8's ;)

My dad changed the water pump himself on my Accord - think it was an aftermarket pump, ran something under $150 (I believe). We don't really intend to keep the car that much longer (it's an 88) so OEM vs aftermarket isn't a big deal to us.

Thanks for your quick pm btw...also the problem I am having with the lights and warning in the dash was a problem "BEFORE" I replaced my fuse box.

Sorry Skoorb but the answer he gave is for MOST cars, and yours is not in that book.

Its not that the chain itself gos bad, BUT the little plastic parts break and cause the chain to go slak and eat up the timing cover. If the chain starts to make ANY noise that is not norm. then get it changed with all the other LITTLE parts inside. If it eats up the timing cover than that will add more to the bill.

Then it is possible that it is your alternator.

It costs me about $250 and that included having all the other belts changed too.

EDIT: My original water pump lasted 195,000 miles. If it's not leaking or making noise I don't see why it should be changed.
