My timing belt broke and it was fixed but it feels like I have about 30-40 % less power now. Is it possible that the new belt has changed the engine timing so it less powerful?

They SHOULD have reset the timing when they put the new belt on. Check and se if your fuel or air filters are plugged.

You should use a timing light, it should tell you if the timing is on or not. There is no factory specs for it, it's either timed right or not.

Your cam timing is off one tooth
bring it back

Another possibilty is that when you originally broke the belt the pistons hit the valves

What Roger said.

Mazda's always smack the valves. :(

I own one, and did my belt in Nov, after my mechanic told me this.

He had a Mazda truck in the shop, and ALL the valves got bent when the belt let go.

Most likely just off IMO. :)

Yeah I think I will take it back. I don't know enough about engines to diagnose exactly whats wrong with it.

Roger has a good point, many cars have what are called "interferance engines", which means that if the valves are not timed the pistons can hit the valves, bending them and resulting in a loss of compression. If the valves have been damaged be prepared to spend a good amount of money.

So it might be that the engine is broken? Damn 'cause it's not really worth fixing it if it is and if I take it back and it's not their fault then they'll probably end up charging me more for looking at it.

They should have clued you into the possibility of bent valves before they replaced the belt. I wouldn't go back to them. Find a garage that many people recommend... they are rare.

I would take it back to them, the belt is most likely just off a tooth or two and needs to be timed properly.
