I think I've read about 17 of those - obviously not all of them made an impression.

Can't believe Snow Crash is on there. It was ok, but I didn't see anything groundbreaking. Cryptinomicon was much better.

Blasphemy! Well, I guess that the cyberpunk genre was defined earlier by Neuromancer.

Agree completely - had a college prof who was apparently a dues paying member of the Toni Morrison fan club. :(

Yep - I was glad to see Neuromancer on there. In some ways I kind of saw Snow Crash as a caricature of cyberpunk.

I've read seven of them... Beloved wasn't great enough to be on a top 100 list, but it wasn't horrible. I read The Color Purple right around the same time and I actually liked that better.

Good call not ranking them. That just pisses people off.

Glad Tolkien and Lewis were on there. Thought Foundation should be also.

I've read two of those... LOTR and Snow Crash.

I'll eventually get around to reading Neuromancer and 1984, but the rest of that list doesn't look too appealing.

Not to be ignorant, but why are all these considered "top" novels? Should I feel bad that I haven't read 98% of them?

The SciFi grandmasters are notably absent. Nothing by Clarke, Asimov, Bradbury, etc.

I guess the compilers of the list figured those ones were a little too popular. :)

No stephen king...hm I've read about 15 of those books. Most of them were not that great. Esp. To Kill A Mockingbird. Someone explain why this book is so renowned?

Yeah, and at least one Dune book. Cmon.

Moreso than the Lord of the Rings? I don't think you can get more popular than that in sci-fi/fantasy, especially right now. Well maybe with Harry Potter but there's no way they would put one of them on there.

It is kind of strange that some of those were absent. Fahrenheit 451 I figured would've made it on there at least.

Animal Farm, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, Lord of the Flies, The Lord of the Rings, Midnight's Children, 1984.

I've read six out of their one hundred. Time to throw some on my library reserve list.

I thought Catcher in the Rye was pretty funny. To Kill A Mockingbird was just kinda sappy.

ive read, or was supposed to have read (read the book notes and discussed in class :D):

The Assistant by Bernard Malamud
The Great Gatsby by FS Fitzgerald
Light in August by Faulkner
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (i was about 11 when we read it tho)
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
To Kill a Mockingbird

Don't really remember The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe really.

My favorite one of the lot was Things Fall Apart... with Okonkwo the Yam farmer ... and the killing of the man who rode an iron horse and seemed to talk through his nose :)
