Sorry, I don't trust any technology articles from a website that is also hosting "Top 10 Tom Hanks Hairstyles."

Shares in Apple and RIMM are up between 200% and 300% over the same period.
They also can't spell RIM.

RIMM is their stock symbol, though it doesn't make much sense to use one company's name and the other company's stock symbol.

This. The entire article just exhumes "dumbed down"ness.

Then why is the article called The 10 Biggest Tech Failures? :(

The use of "Tech" refers to the tech industry (notice capitalization). As in industry, commercial success is the primary concern. This list doesn't refer to the actual technology that goes into these products.

Cicuit City started DIVX around 1998 so it technically doesn't fall into "last decade"...although it didn't actually die until 1999. So it should count.

That was a massive fail.

The PS3 definitely needs to be on that list.

Then they can't spell AAPL

See, I can be stupid and post stock ticker links too.

Whatever. :disgust:

Either you clearly knew RIMM was the ticker for RIM and decided to be petty and point out a 'spelling error' or you didn't know that and I was simply calling you out on your stupidity.

If it's the former then  @ you for falling into the trap.. if it's the latter.. well you're just a dumbass then.

Youtube failed I suppose because they're not generating revenue for google, AND it sort of failed in its mission to deliver user-created vids, and instead got bogged down in lawsuits and copy right infringement.

But I think youtube is awesome.

The Zune pass/store is very slick, I've got a new Zune 120 and it's a great player, and subscription based music service without a second rate player ftw!

Also, look for a big Zune announcement this month. Dev team hints have me expecting to a Zune Phone touchscreen competitor to the iPhone. Ambitious move if they do it, but so was the first Zune. Maybe they'll put it on a network other than AT&T.

It's gaining what? it will never even be the #2 player. Apple of course has nothing to worry about, and Sandisk (#2) has nothing to worry about either really. Microsoft is LAME their latest statement was to the effect

"don't buy the new iPhone or Pre in June, we have a PRESS RELEASE coming out around then!" So basically they expect me to not buy a new iPhone because they're going to release info on a Zunephone, mind you it won't actually be a lunch. I'm supposed not buy shit then wait god knows how many more months because of a fucking press release?

MS is reaching. A Zune would be the last brand of MP3 player I'd buy as you can't do any modding to them at all. If I can't Rockbox, jailbreak or do heavy modding to it, I don't want it. A Zune is basically a POS in this aspect. Also being locked into 1 software to sync it and no ability to use it as external HD makes an already unappealing player even worse in my eyes.

This is what happened.

The author submitted the article with both stocks referred to by their ticker symbols. An editor saw AAPL and decided that people might get confused, so he changed it to Apple. The editor didn't realize that RIMM is also a ticker symbol, because it's nearly identical to the acronym of the company's name. The editor also didn't notice that the author used "lead" when he meant "led."

Geeks are a tiny fraction of the music player market. My GF, who doesn't do much of anything with computers, *loves* her Zune.

iTunes flat out sucks as software (on the Microsoft platform at least, IDK how it runs on a Mac).

The PS3 is just positioning. By the logic of PS3 being a failure, Xbox should also be, given that it's lost billions.

Microsoft ate those losses to gain a place in the living room, and to start establishing branding. It's paying off, as 360 definitely off to a better start than original.

I'd imagine it's pretty cheap to make a PS3 by this point, they're still selling, and it was likely a very large piece of the puzzle that led BR to victory over HDDVD.

Really the only clear 'winner' in terms of video game consoles is the Wii, if you're looking at profitability. Nintendo didn't pack the thing full of gee-whiz bleeding-edge tech, they just made something that could appeal to the widest age group, scoop up casual gamers left in the cold by PS and Xbox, and let the titans throw money after marketshare and mindspace.

Zune software sucks even more, I installed it on mine, and without asking it went ahead and edited my ID3 tags, so basically my mp3 collection went from perfectly organized to complete hell in a few minutes. A good number of my tags were jacked up and a lot of the album art had been changed. Apparently MS has it gestimate what album is what because the covers it was embedding weren't right 19/20 times.

i will never use the Zune software again, for anything. It took me 3 weeks to retag every tag MS software fucked up. And in all honesty even with iTunes not being the best software on the PC, it's easier to use than Zune's, so a non geek type will have less struggle syncing an iPod.

I quickly glanced at the article itself. It seems like the writer is simply stating tech failures in terms of "did not make assloads of profit." Which is both a fair and absurd way to label something a "failure." Sure, not making money is a bad business model but a failure? Shrug. YouTube rocks. I love Vista, I've had 0 problems. I love my Zune (I'm an iPod hater). Like the OP said, Palm is playing catch up right now .. coming out with smartphones only and a new OS. I can understand HD-DVD.. but really, this list is fail.

You're doing it wrong... My music is all in great order, and the software helped fix up a lot of bad or unknown tags with a little bit of work.

And how is syncing hard? Plug into usb, done?

why because there are a whopping 2 MS products on it? Vista is a failure, people who use it can say whatever they want about how it's great blah blah blah. If Vista was great we wouldn't be getting Windows 7 in a few months. Vista was the definition of a failure. The Zune is a failure due to how much money MS has lost on it so far (with no end in sight) MS's PMP market share won't increase any, so if they're going to remain stuck at #3, I would say the Zune will always be a failure. Nobody wants to be #3.

The list was pretty much spot on.

Yeah I have no idea WTF he's on about. GF's Zune, and the software with it, works brilliantly. Fast, easy, smooth, and in our case it didn't screw anything up (in fact it added a lot of missing info, corrected bad info, and even put images for the covers for almost all of her MP3 collection, something that Itunes just doesn't do AFAIK).

Yup, but there was an extended time when they were a premier computer company. Gateway stormed from ahead to lose.

For all around crappiness in 'puters, I'd rank Packard-Bell as undeniably numero uno. They were the worst, and they were pretty big, too.

I thought so too, but since I got a company-issued iPhone I've been using iTunes, and I've actually come to like it. My only real complaint is that it's slow. I couldn't live without the Smart Playlists feature though.

LOL.

I sort of agree, though with a couple of Caveats.

If you had a PB, and you took out that awful soundcard+modem thing, and replaced them with say a SB32 and USR 56k HW Modem, then loaded a fresh OEM Windows load, they ran great. They almost invariably used decent Intel-chipset mainboards, which were so much better than crap like Opti Viper and so forth.

Their worst aspects were the freakishly horrible PB Windows load (I think they must have invented crapware / bloatware), and those atrocious combo cards. Getting drivers working on those was like pulling rhinoceros teeth.
