All of the times they "ice" the kicker, the TO is called after the two teams lineup and set. This is the coach standing next to the ref, waiting until just before the ball is snapped and calling TO. It's not the same as icing the kicker...and to say it's the same as it has been done for years in college and HS and before this year in the NFL is ridiculous.

Better explanation than I could give.

People who don't think this trick violates the spirit of the game confuse me.

The ONLY time I like this tactic is when the kicker makes the SECOND kick. I also think if they are going to keep this rule on the books, they should also allow the kicker to walk up to the opposing coach after making the game winning SECOND kick and stick two middle fingers in his face. I think then I'd be happy with the rule. :)

So keep the rules as they are but if the kick gets off before it can be stopped then the points count in addition he gets a second kick.

That would stop that huh?

The traditional "icing" the kicker was to just call a timeout before the kick to try and mess with the kicker's head- give him more time to think about the pressure of the kick. Its still kinda silly in that it wastes time, may or may not have any real effect, and is boring for the fans, but there was nothing cheap about it. A defensive player would call timeout, on the field, in full view of the kicking team, so that play could be stopped well before the snap.

This new tactic is cheap because the call comes from the sideline, out of sight of the kicking team. The kicking team has to lineup and play as if no timeout is coming, the defending team does not. Its not really fair to the kicking team and it definitely sucks for fans or anyone else watching. Last second wins, walk-off homeruns, halfcourt desperation jump shots- all are some of the most exciting moments in sports. I doubt the NFL wants these games to be ruined by this tactic.

Should they be allowed to do it? Yes, because there is no rule against it right now.

Should they be allowed to do it? No, because it's horrible sportsmanship. Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's ethical.

Since when is there sportsmanship in the NFL?

icing the kicker is a solid strategy, but if they dont call the timeout in time for the refs to stop the play they should be SOL
