Timeline for Adoption of 802.11n Standard

The more people buy the Draft, the longer it would take to the standard to come out.

This is the biggest news of all.

Keep buying non-standard crap, and the manufacturers will stall the approval. This how it always is. Stop buying it.

mdcrab, the table that you linked does not seem to be specific to 802.11n but rather a general 802.11

In the first chart labeled In-Process the third line from the bottom is labeled "IEEE Std 802.11n-xxxx". I believe this should be the "N' timeline. From what I have read once the Draft 3 is approved it will be very close to final.

In any case, if I read the table correctly the predication for Final approval is Sep.08

I.e. Real standard hardware should be available for the end of 2008 beginning of 2009.

Because manufacturers are stonewalling it to protect their installed base of non-standard equipment. They effectively push "their way" to make it into the standard. This severely delays progress because of all the bickering.

Because the concern parties cannot agree on some of the features.

It seems that some of them are swaying toward a standard that would benefit their own technology capacity/patent/whatever.

In the mind of the marketers a good sale number on the Drafts reduces the urgency of settling.

They make nice money of the Drafts since the price is about twice of what it should be.

i wouldnt be surprised if wireless n NEVER gets finalized. its just not that fast, at least compared to the 60ghz stuff that is in development now....

I do not think that it would not pass but in reality, the 802.11n hardware would not be a big Joy to begin with.

The enhancement is counting on the MIMO arrangement of the Antenna.

Building these triple Antenna is cumbersome the amount of ads ons and auxiliary device would be limited because of the hassle to make the Antenna arrangement practical.

For Business use, it would be a real travesty.

For the majority of End-Users that are using the Wireless solely for Internet surfing there would not be an incentive to upgrade.

no kidding. i rarely use wireless for file transfers, and wireless g runs a 12mb net connection no prob. would be nice to stream high-def video though i guess... whenever i get that 100" projector.

Watch it. A 100" projector would be a pretty big.
