So you are running your car for at least 2 hours each day, hmmm, that's some serious pollution. :p Most people in bigger cities have to do the same thing though.
Yep....Atlanta has a lovely brown haze in the air on most summer days thanks to all our commuters. Something we didn't have 10 years ago before everyone and their cat decided to move here.

Well then, their cat's should just use public transit shouldn't they?!
The Dog Lobby is holding up the legislation to address this issue. You know how it is.... :p

(OT- our public transport SUCKS....part of the reason we have so many commuters)

people can't fit in regular cars because they're fat? i'm sorry, but the passenger space of the explorer was no where as large my old taurus.

as for safety, SUVs based on truck frames (as well as trucks) are generally safer when hitting "soft" objects like cars, which can absorb much of the energy of the impact. also, whichever vehicle has more kinetic energy (usually the vehicle that weighs more since speeds are generally about the same on streets with a crossover danger) will go through less acceleration than the smaller vehicle, which is a huge cause of injury. truck frame vehicles are generally pretty awful against "hard" objects like large trees, freeway supports, buildings, and the like, since they usually don't absorb energy as well as unibody vehicles.

Okay so anyway ;), how bout that MDX? What a joke huh, an SUV on a Minivan chassis. The exhaust pipe running UNDER the rear axel always gives it away.

And that new one from Porsche, "Hi welcome to heatville can I be your twin-turbo SUV today"

Glad the Tracker is finally going away

Excursion needs to dump that honeycomb grille

Good riddance to the Rodeo/Pissport.

Why is SUV all the rage? well, it's a fad thing for many people I know that own them. But I do know some that put good use to them. I still firmly believe that vehicles over 4K lbs should require a Class "SUV" to drive them for safety reasons. (That would include me my truck is 5300lbs and I'm fully willing) I think we will see some of the rage slowdown on the bigger one's as gas prices get more and more absurd.

I agree. I filled up the other day right after a guy in an Excursion......he coughed up almost $70 to fill his tank. :Q

Why do we like SUV's? It's simple, modern cars have knocked our metaphorical hats off too often. Let me explain.

If a person looks at the size of a car like the Model T or the Model A and compares it to an SUV, there are striking similarities. The ground clearance is roughly equal. Both have legitimate rear seats that have enough room to carry adults for long distances. Both have enough cargo room to carry luggage for four adults on a long trip. Both assume that at some point you would probably want to tow a trailer of some sort. Both have enough headroom that you could wear a proper hat (e.g. something like a fedora) inside the car. Both have even been villified by people who thought they were a danger to society (remember the "get a horse" crowd when the Model T came about). Until the 1970's, most American cars still shared these characteristics. Universal roof-racks attached to rain gutters so you could haul your canoe. The trunks had enough space to carry all the provisions for a family camping trip, the drivetrain was robust enough to haul a trailer, and you didn't have to be a contortionist or a three year old to fit comfortably in the back seat. During the 1970's and 1980's, things changed. Interiors got cramped. Drivetrains got weakened in the quest to save weight. No more roof racks because the gutters weren't there anymore. Trunk space shrunk. The SUV is really just a return to the great American Station Wagon. A Ford Expedition is nothing more than the Vista Cruiser of the late 1990's and early 2000's.

It's a cycle that's continuous. Even now we can see the backlash beginning. The children whose parents have loved SUV's are seeing the SUV in the same way that previous generations saw the station wagon. It's mom and dad's car. Practical in some ways but terribly boring in others. This attitude will continue to grow. It's already fueling a resurgance of the sports car (witness the Lancer Evo and the WRX most recently, and the S2000 and 350Z also) and I think it's going to keep up.

Yeah, those babies have 44 gallon tanks, and if he's got the V10 he'll be back at that pump in about 1 week. I'd definantly have to get the new 6.0 Powerstroke if I was to ever have one of them. (Be back in just under 2 weeks instead ;) )

Just curious as to why you're sorta singling out the Rodeo/Passport ? Something I should know about ?

If you buy an SUV, then you are contributing to this country's reliance on oil, in essence you are aiding the terrorists.
As our great president GWB put it the best, you are either with us or you are with the terrorists.
So if you are American, stop driving your SUVs or leave the country, we don't want a bunch of terrorist sympathizers over here! :p

I'm not a big fan of the 4L30 Transmission. the 1995's don't have 4L30's so you are safe ;)

but don't worry it's not just the Rodeo, it's the S-10 Blazers, the Trackers, the Jeep Cherokee's when they had the 2.8 especially were total crap. ;)

    • "Larger, heavier vehicles generally are crashworthier than smaller, lighter ones. First, larger vehicles typically have longer crush zones, which helps protect the safety cage in one- and two-vehicle accidents. Plus, the extra weight offers additional safety in two-vehicle crashes -- as the heavier vehicle plows into the lighter one, some of its momentum is transferred to the other vehicle."
The 5 safest cars of all time
    • According to the IIHS, vehicle size can protect you in both single- and two-vehicle collisions because larger vehicles usually have longer crumple zones that help prevent damage to the safety cage while reducing the crash forces inside it.

Vehicle weight, on the other hand, protects you principally in two-vehicle crashes, says the IIHS. In a head-on crash, for example, the heavier vehicle drives the lighter one backward. This decreases forces inside the heavy vehicle and increases forces in the lighter one. So while all heavy vehicles, even poorly designed ones, offer this advantage in two-vehicle collisions, they may not offer good protection in single-vehicle crashes.

The novel study's bottom line: Sport utility vehicles and pickups aren't as protective as many of their owners believe, while they are also uniquely dangerous to everyone else.

You can go back and forth getting statistics and articles about SUV safety. Of course the auto industry is going to try and make SUV's look safer hence the overwhelming majority of articles saying SUV's are safer.

I suppose driving through the blizzard in Virginia last week, and the deluge in Raleigh this weekend gave me a little bit of comfort though. In Richmond, I drove by SUV after SUV wreck in my wife's Taurus, and going to Raleigh, I drove by 3 flipped SUVs or 4x4s in my SAAB 9-5. SUV drivers need to learn that their cars aren't impervious all weather race cars.

Some people also need to learn that just because they own an SUV, that doesn't mean that they're always in 4 wheel drive! Most SUVs are not full time 4wd, and even more are not 4wd at all. Probably nearly every SUV you saw wrecked was in 2wd with an idiot behind the wheel that didn't know how to drive (hence going too fast and crashing), and also didn't want to have to press that 4x4 button or stop to change into 4wd, or he was in a 2wd SUV.

That being said, I'm not saying that being in 4wd automatically makes a vehicle & driver impervious to the elements. But, with a good driver, being in 4wd is almost always safer than being in a 2wd car in a snow storm.

It's also extremely ignorant when people just blame SUVs for high fuel consumption. Many (not all) 4 door sedans barely get more than 20MPG average. Most pick-up trucks get the same MPG or less than SUVs. So someone getting 15 - 17MPG in their SUV is supporting terrorism, but someone in a car that gets 5MPG more, they're perfectly fine...

Honestly, I think the biggest problem is people thinking 4WD will help them slow down as much as it helps them accellerate in slippery conditions....it doesn't. People think they're invincible in bad weather until they try to stop quickly and end up in a ditch.

It's also extremely ignorant when people just blame SUVs for high fuel consumption. Many (not all) 4 door sedans barely get more than 20MPG average. You're half right. The whole "poor fuel economy supports terrorism" thing is stupid. However, SUV's and trucks bear more of the blame for our overall thirstiness as a nation than do the rest of the cars on the road. Almost all get crappy mileage and there are a lot of them on the roads to boot whereas the mileage for cars varies greatly.....I still woudn't go so far as to say "many get barely more than 20mpg" unless you've got some stats to back that up.

Fuel Economy Guide for 2003 Vehicles should anyone care to dig around.
