Went to a Homes Association meeting for our neighborhood last night. Probably 50 or 60 home owners. The main topic was that Google was just approved in our area. We all knew Google was coming but the city council stalled as long as they could (probably receiving bribes from TW), but they could not hold out any longer.

By show of hands Google will be getting installed in 98% of all the homes. Only a few had Dish or Direct TV, but even those people said when their two year contract runs out, they will be moving to Google.

Time Warner had the monopoly out here for many years (before Dish and Direct TV). Because of that, poor service, poor quality, and ever increasing bills really pissed off most everyone. It was really amazing the hatred all these people had for Time Warner. Nobody had any pity for Time Warner and only wished them a quiet and peaceful death.

Will Google cause the end of Time Warner?

It will take a long time for Google to even make a dent to big cable, but I'd be 100% for it.

You gotta love Google... they're basically the only broadband company out there right now that is forcing the telcos and cable companies to improve their service.

Comcast will cause the end of Time Warner, not Google. Monopolies...FTMFL!

Hopefully, the Google movement will continue and push speeds up and hopefully, prices down (I won't hold my breath).

Oh, and fuck Time Warner.

I would think the biggest concern of GF would be the data mining and the obvious privacy intrusions. Sure, I imagine TW is doing on some level, but Google is clearly far better at it and can get far more invasive than anyone else could possibly do... and that includes the NSA.

They won't. There aren't enough places for Google to get the infrastructure built for them for pennies on the dollar.

Get a vpn with the money saved, and run a tor node to help everyone else out that isn't fortunate enough to have a choice.

I'll say they've improved a little bit, but I'm sure it's the threat of Google hanging over them here. (Austin)

Good to know the consensus is no longer "good nuff internet" and they have woken to realize competition is the only thing that will salvage the broadband landscape in America.

The NSA owns what Google owns. If they haven't gotten it through a tap, they can just ask for(demand) the data they want. There's nothing anyone can do about it, and no one will know unless another patriot leaks the info.

Google has a slow time frame because it takes time to lay out fiber and get govts on board.

but why is Google laying out fiber?!
thought Lucent spent $Billions$ laying fiber everywhere during the tech hayday (2000s).

no one rented/leased back then and Lucent stock tanked from $80 to $3.

why cant google just buy that fiber for pennies?!

So-called dark fiber is long-haul fiber for connecting cities. It's not neighborhood fiber for individual households. It's slowly getting used up to further improve backbone capacity, but it doesn't help Google in this case.

Overland Park here too. Rumor has it that the city council were receiving bribes from Time Warner to keep Google out for the last few years. Time Warner knows they will lose their shirt if Google comes to Overland Park.

What do I care? Since I am not a terrorist, don't do anything illegal, why should I care if Google or the NSA reads my emails. Heck, if they want, I would not even mind CC: them on all my emails. For my company to prosper, I need faster Internet. Then I prosper. That is the bottom line.

I think that if the Chinese People's Liberation Army started a large ISP in the US, and earmarked all profits to be used to bayonet young children and pregnant women, there would be an overwhelming tide of Time Warner and Comcast cable customers who would move to the new provider.

That's how much the cable companies are despised in the US.

I think the view can get warped on a tech forum. I'd be interested in knowing what percentage of people even know the name of their ISP
