Time Warner raising my internet $14 for same speed. Any wiggle room?

$64 for 15mpbs down and 1 mpb up, up from $50. The modem lease fee is also going up from $6 to $8. (will probably have to break down and buy one finally, $8 every month for that $10 box is ridiculous) Question is, have any of you ever had any luck calling in and negotiating for a better rate when they try a price hike? Any tips if so?

I mean I could see hikes with TV because they have to renegotiate contracts, but something like internet speed should if anything be getting cheaper to provide over time.

You can always call and threaten to cancel (ask to speak to retentions) and get a 'new customer deal', but if they aren't willing to budge, you're kind of SOL. You might, depending on where you live, have other options (Verizon FiOS or AT&T DSL might be options), but pricing may be more.

The reality is, they are raising their rates because they can. I doubt the cost of continuing to service most places without upgrading their infrastructure (because they aren't) hasn't going up $14 per subscriber.

You can't buy your own cable modem with TW anymore, so they can screw you over and charge forever for their modem. Up until they stopped letting us use our own modems, I had a $50 one that worked fine for years.

Pisses me off to no end, that they can advertise $99/mo for cable/phone/internet, yet you can't even use those services without a cable box (extra $10) and cable modem (extra $10). Been mulling over suing them for false advertising, but I always feel dirty anytime I have to contact them. My $99 plan costs $181/mo after all the added charges (2 cable boxes, 2 remotes, cable modem, fees and taxes).

I have my own modem (SB6141) with Time Warner.
I pay 34.99 for their 50/1.
I had to threaten to cancel to have them put back the promo rate.

They're raising internet rates to make up for the cord cutting do gooders.

That isn't true. Studies have shown that the amount of cable subscribers has remained around 68% of those with the ability to have access. Cord cutters are insignificant in everything except expansion beyond the rate of availability and population growth in the US.

I have Comcast.
I have my own cable modem and did from the start. Fuck monthly fees/rates.
EVERY.SINGLE. 6 or 12 months I have to call again and threaten to cancel again to get the latest promo. I just keep resigning up for promos everytime they run out. My internet usually runs ~$29.99/month, depending on the promo.

Comcast raised prices around $10 on me before. I quit them and went ATT DSL for about a month. Then signed back up as a new customer with a promo rate. I was able to stream netflix fine over DSL and DSL was only $20 a month. The only thing that hampered me was Steam downloads.

TWC is pretty good at giving discount rates if you just call and ask.

Yes, you can use your own modem with TWC. I bought one the instant that they started charging for modems. It has paid for itself already.

You probably aren't interested, but TWC's lowest plan is not that bad (Everyday Low Price). For $14.99 a month, I can stream most videos without any buffering, or do two Pandora streams + light surfing at the same time. I don't see much need for most people to get more than that unless you are family all trying to download stream movies at the same time.

Charter pulled that crap with me. I called them up and told them to turn my connection off that day after they said they couldn't give me a better deal. Their retention department then offered me what I had been paying and I then quoted them what the other 2 people I had talked with told me....that they couldn't do it. If you ask me, those companies are crap for not being up-front about their pricing and resorting to bait and switch practices. They offer you introductory rates and extremely high standard rates.... I've been cable internet free since August and saved $250+ so far....I may call them back next year...or not. I've not had time for online gaming and have DirecTV for their superior programming... (grandfathered on Verizon's wireless data plan too so I'm set..)

Yes, there is always wiggle room. First call and ask about any new rates/promos they can get you. If not, ask for retention services. When you speak to retention, tell them you are paying $64 for their standard internet and that it's too high and don't think you will stay if you have to keep paying that. Usually they will help you bring it down in some way, or offer you more services for the same price.

Also, use twitter. Send a tweet to @TWC_Help or whatever their customer service handle is. Tell them the same situation that you are paying too much for basic service and want a better deal or you will leave. They will respond to you asking for account #, etc and will try to see what they can do.

Lastly, yes buy your own modem. The Motorola SB6141 (i think that's the model #) can be had for $70-80 (or less sometimes) which will keep you future proofed for awhile. The cost of the modem will be recouped in no time.

Good luck, I always call in like every few months to get them to knock off certain things, or give me discounts. Usually I am able to get some kind of temporary discount.

You can if you just get internet. If you get other services (especially phone) they are dependant on the crappy included modem.

I have TWC internet + TV. I bought my own modem a few months ago and had no issues having them send the proper codes to activate it. It's been working well so far.

I've never set up a modem before and have never configured anything like this. How difficult is it and what are the chances that I'll mess up something and have to pay a tech to fix it?

If it is anything like setting up their modems, it isn't hard. You simply have to give them in serial number and mac address for the modem, which should be written somewhere on it. You'd likely have to do this over the phone, so I guess they could fat finger it.

I guess I'm wary because I got lost in the staggering number of menus and menus of menus and terminology used in the software of my router I tried to set up but struggled with.

This is what I did.

OP buy your own modem off Amazon or something, save the $8 per month. You are paying exactly what I am paying right now with Comcast... Sucks that they upped your price, but they know you can't do shit.
