Hey ya'll! Been reading this forum for quite a long time, but this my first post.

Anyways, I've been beta testing Vista for some time, and been building a decent system for it. Here are my basic specs:

DFI nForce4 Ultra-D
AMD X2 4400 oc'ed to 2.6
2GB DDR400 OC'ed to DDR480 speeds
7900GTX 512MB

But with DX10 coming up shortly, and the fact that I have a bit of cash laying around, would it be worthwhile to upgrade to a Core2Duo cpu and a 8800 series card at this point? A part of me wants to justify doing it, but another parts wants to be dutch.

What do you guys think?

Also, if I was to upgrade, what would a good asking price be for that hardware?

Hello friend.

Your build is indeed outdated. For example, your mobo and cpu are no longer produced and i doubt you will fine. DDR400 memory is also hardly available anymore.
If you want to stick to AMD then aquire nForce5 mobo (570 ultra) and AM2 Athlon X2 processor.

If AMD does not mean any special to you then go for Intel Core 2 Duo.
You can try the E4300 (if you plan to OC it much) or the E6300 (for some little or no OC).

Ican recommend you the Asus P5B-Deluxe or the GigaByte GA-965P-DS3 (or DS4 if you plan to overcluck much). They are both based upon the Intel 965 chipset + ICH8/8R southbridge. These mobos require DDR2 memory which is cheape and easy to find compared to DDR400.

And for DX10 vga card, only if you have some extra money to spend. The 7900GTX is truly a great card and it will run ALL games with maximum quality settings.

It is up to you.

I hope this was helpful to you.

Thanks, that did help actually, a bit of a push I needed.

Still curious what the value of those compnents, sold seperately or together would be.

Also, if I was to get a DX10 card, would it be worth the wait for the ATi's R600 boards?

Yeah, just read up on guru3d.com that they'll be shipping with 1GB of GDDR4....

can't wait to hear final specs on them.

I think I'll defenitely be selling my rig in the coming months when I rebuild. Core2Duo, here I come!

Astroguardian - that rig is not that outdated. Ok its 939 with a 7900gtx but both are fine ffor the moment.

There is little point in going to AM2 at the moment, especially from 939 there is not much extra performance to be had.

Unless your current games don't run well with the 7900gtx then there is no real point in going for a DX10 card just yet. Wait until the r600 comes out, this will help to reduce prices on the 8800 series cards.

On the other hand I recently went from similar setup to a core 2 duo E6600 with an 8800gtx and have been very impressed with the performance.

Oh, my bad. I thought that those specs was what he intended to purchase.

Sorry my bad.

Since i updated myself, i recommend you stick to your current rig. It is quite solid build. It can be faithful to you until prices of C2D and DX10 vga cards go down.
So i recommend you hold on for a while until E4300 and ATI's R600 become widely spreaded.

Your rig is not outdated just yet. Going to AM2 is a waste of money since it won't give you a huge boost over your 939 rig. I would hold off until the prices of the 8800 series comes down or they release some mid range cards. Your system is good for some time, especially with a 7900GTX.

tubar,

What is up? There is a lot of skepticism in regards to your creditbility as you have quite a few AT'ers pissed off right now. To say the least you have some balls! Please refer to this link

tubars FS Post

"that I have a bit of cash laying around" is an understatement!

"Also, if I was to upgrade, what would a good asking price be for that hardware", Your hardware has already been sold once!

We are all wondering what is going on! I would like to get my $149 refunded as you sold the memory to both me and another party in addition to the video card! You do have some cash as you have accepted payment from 4 people and no one has heard from you since! To save your face here that is what I would do, anyone reading this beware! Please pm me once you have read this. Your roomy also advised that you have skated on him and is wondering what is going on!
